St. Paul, MN says cut military, spend more locally
St. Paul Pioneer Press ^ | October 10 , 2010

St. Paul became the first city in Minnesota Wednesday, Oct. 10, to formally resolve that federal military spending needs to be trimmed.

A resolution sponsored by St. Paul City Council Member Amy Brendmoen unanimously passed the seven-member board. It asks the state's congressional delegation to support shifting funding priorities from military operations to the needs of local communities.

"The bottom line for me is that federal spending impacts the money that goes to local initiatives," Brendmoen said.

Wednesday's council meeting was attended by members of various anti-war and social justice groups, as well as state Sen. Sandy Pappas, DFL-St. Paul, and anti-war activist Coleen Rowley.

Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer, a professor of Justice and Peace Studies at the University of St. Thomas, said if every American taxpayer received a bill for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, St. Paul taxpayers' share would total an estimated $1.7 billion over the past decade.

Other major cities to pass resolutions in favor of trimming military spending are Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Hartford, Conn. Rowley said peace activists have approached the city councils in Eagan and Lakeville, but have yet to hear back. They also plan to approach Apple Valley, Inver Grove Heights, Shoreview and Mounds View in coming days.

Amen! Without a strong military, they won’t have to worry about local initiatives! They also pick senators who won’t put their hand on a Bible to be sworn in!

St Paul, send these idiots back to US Civics class.

Ignorant & pretentious - a deadly combination.

anti-war activist Coleen Rowley

This was the woman that testified during W's term about mishandling of information about 9/11 (and a former FBI special agent) and the Left sung her praises across the land, IIRC.

Well, since we have no enemies this seems like a great way to reallocate our resources....uuuuuhhhh, we might have one or two enemies on second thought...when the terrorists rams a couple of airliners into some of their local sky scrapers, who are they going to call on...the local day care center personnel?....these people and their ilk make me want to puke!

Maybe we should start with cutting all military bases in Minnisota. We’ll see how fast they change their tune once that happens.

Why don’t they just cut their state budgets?Every state has some room to cut spending.

There is a huge VA Hospital in Minneapolis, right next door to St Paul. There are thousands that work there. I wonder if they realize this.

The St. Paul city council voted unanimously to pay all their bills with acorns. They also voted unanimously to beam themselves to the planet Uranus. They also think that you can watch The English Channel on cable channel 402.

ACLU: Warrantless electronic surveillance surges under Obama

The reports that we received document an enormous increase in the Justice Department’s use of pen register and trap and trace surveillance. As the chart below shows, between 2009 and 2011 the combined number of original orders for pen registers and trap and trace devices used to spy on phones increased by 60%, from 23,535 in 2009 to 37,616 in 2011.

Good thing that evil Bush is gone so we have a right to privacy again.

wonder when the council will address this?
