Obama's Ohio Silver Lining
National Journal ^ | o | Major Garrett

Posted on 10/11/2012 8:36:56 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

Rattled, dismayed, and shaken, President Obama's national campaign is divided into two camps: impassive warhorses and anxiety-ridden newbies.

The battle-scarred operatives have been doing nonstop psychic triage since the first presidential debate, calming nerves and reassuring the shaken that campaigns have their ups and downs.

"This is the first time in this entire campaign some of the new people have seen a bad run," said a senior Obama strategist. "The veterans are telling them they need to ride it out."

That became a bit easier around noon on Wednesday when the first patch of internal polls came back from key swing states. They revealed that Obama was not in free fall, as some feared, but that his support has returned to where it was in July and August.

"Voters haven't switched from us to him," the strategist said, referring to GOP nominee Mitt Romney. "But they are giving him a second look. They are thinking about him again. The question is, can he [Romney] close the deal."

That was supposed to be Obama's task at the first debate, one he clearly fumbled. Internal Obama swing-state polling now confirms this harsh reality: The president's lackluster performance cost him all of the advantages he built up through the Democratic National Convention and via Romney's now-infamous dismissal of the "47 percent" of the country that he said in a closed-door fundraiser would never vote for him.

In other words, in 90 minutes, Obama flushed a month's worth of convention and 47-percent bounce.

"We were in the lead, but that's all washed away," the president's strategist said. "Now it's up to us to make the case again against him. Most undecideds are making a choice about him, not the president."

...."Everybody's fully engaged now," [Ohio state chairman of Obama's statewide campaign Eric] Kearney said.......

Very difficult for any campaign when the reality of candidate becomes apparent even to his closest aids.

Obama is a House of Cards. Sorry, we all thought he would come through and do great things. Never in my life time was a president given a clear mandate. He chose to squander it, and resort to the typical petty politics that remind one of Chicago, my home town by the way.

There is nothing to ride out. The only thing to do, is diversion or find some excuse not to show up for the next two debates.

I would actually sort of enjoy seeing Romney lose Ohio and still win the election (by winning Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Michigan or some combination thereof) if for no other reason to finally kill this stupid media narrative that “As goes Ohio, so goes the election.” I’m sick of being forced to worship at the altar of Ohio every four years...

When you have to leak (fake) internals to your media pals to calm your base down, you are losing.

Most undecideds are making a choice about him, not the president.

Thats a lie. Undecided are making a choice on re-electing the incumbent, which break at least 2 to 1 against.

Well, you must admit Ohio is a pretty damn good bellweather. The state has not voted for a losing presidential candidate since 1960. And there is good reason to believe that election was stolen. I don’t think any state can match Ohio’s accuracy.

America is desperately looking for an alternative to Obama. With the corrupt MSM working hand-in-glove with the Obama campaign over the past summer months voters strongly hesitated. The debate showed the American people that Romney is an acceptable alternative to Obama.

Obama will not be in a free-fall as the corrupt MSM and the Obama billion dollar war-chest will assure. Nonetheless, Romney has shown that he is an acceptable alternative to Obama and if Romney simply acts as the steady-handed Romney in the last two debates he will close the deal.

I see it this way: Romney just has to show Americans who he is in the last two debates. Obama has been intentionally clever to whisper post debate doubts into people's ear: “Was Romney really that good, or was he lying and acting?”

If Romney is just himself in the last two debates he will most certainly win. Regardless, the campaign has irrevocably shifted. Before, Obama was in the driver's seat, not Romney is at the wheel and can steer his course.

My money is on Romney. Not just wishful thinking; I do believe he will win in November.

Well,....since you asked so nicely....

It struck me that many of Obama's "youthful green" supporters-workers are demoralized and that is a GOOD thing.

But then again, Obama's camp of seasoned operatives are going to push back any which way they can.

We need to keep moving at them.

I hope the Ryan-Biden match-up tonight will go a long way toward continuing to rattle Obama's camp and depress his support.

One additional point: No Republican has EVER won the White House without winning Ohio. Maybe this year will be the exception, but that would mean Romney would have to make up for it elsewhere, and Ohio is certainly more Republican leaning than say, PA, MI, or WI.

Sick of it too, so I understand where you’re coming from.

However, I’d like to see Romney overwhelmingly win the popular vote, win all the states he needs without Ohio...but then going on to still win Ohio and have an overwhelming win that can’t be challenged.

Because it’s Major Garrett, because it’s not complimentary (at least the excerpt isn’t), and because it shows Obama behind but not knocked out by that first debate beating (which most everyone agrees is the proper perspective.)

I don’t really know why CW posted it, but those are things I noticed about it.

Right. They just needed (wanted) someone to reach out and pull them from the sinking “Obama has run us aground” ship (someone with a sure grip). They see Romney as that guy (with Ryan by his side).

Further, I think there was almost a national euphoria after the first debate. Americans had been hoping for something better than Obama and Romney proved to be a more than an acceptable alternative and the polling showed people cheered this!

Now, again, Obama has played the devil on American’s shoulders telling them that what they saw wasn't real, Romney was lying, Romney was acting. So there is now that element of doubt creeping in, but I have no doubt that Romney will seal the deal in the final two debates by simply being Romney and not the Obama/corrupt MSM caricature.
