Republican rival Mitt Romney picked up 3 points to lead U.S. President Obama 49 percent to 46 percent, a United Press International poll indicated Thursday.
Romney's lead, which was within the poll's 4.5 percentage-point margin of error, was based on a national survey taken by UPI-CVoter pollsters in the days following the first presidential debate.
It is the first time Romney has had the lead since the UPI poll began this election cycle.
The latest results are based on nationwide interviews with 1,428 registered voters of which 1,110 said they were likely to vote in the election. The margin of error for the total sample is 3.5 percentage points and the margin of error for the likely voter sample is 4.5 percentage points.

If these media outlet polls are still polling Dems by +10 over Reps then Romney must now be ahead by double digits.
They know O IS TOAST...............
Any incumbent polling at 46% this close to Election Day is in big trouble.
Has anyone else noticed that when Obama is polled as ahead but within the margin of error, that fact is noted at the end of an article (if at all), whereas when Romney is polled as ahead but within the margin of error the margin of error gets noted right away?
Neither this one nor any of its predecessors is reflected in the RealClearPolitics average. I wonder why?
Romney can solidify his gains and perhaps gain a few more points simply by showing strength. He needs to look and sound like a leader to the weaklings. If he does so, those who feel instead of think will feel good about voting for him, relax and do so.
This is all sad, but true.
So then the real question is: When do we start bombing aspirin factories in Libya?
I believe the debate sealed the deal. Nobody likes a loser. Uninformed, undecided, and younger voters have heard about the debate in the media, and they will vote for the victor.
UPI is a Mooney outfit, most likely is why.......
Good for them. UPI under current ownership has an outstanding track record, as does Wash Times.
