Brunswick Corporation will close its Sea Ray manufacturing plant in Knoxville, Tenn., and consolidate U.S. cruiser production for Sea Ray in Palm Coast, Fla., and Vonore, Tenn., while producing Bayliner cruisers in Brazil, the company reported Tuesday. Production at the plant will cease by the end of 2012.
“This will be more efficient and still allow us to retain capacity equal to three times our current worldwide cruiser demand, enabling us to adequately increase production when the market improves,” Andrew E. Graves, president of the Brunswick Boat Group, said in a company statement.
The plant currently has a full-time workforce of about 225. Brunswick estimates the actions will save approximately $10 million – $12 million a year once implemented.
The move is part of a larger repositioning of the Bayliner brand as the result of continued weakness in the cruisers segment. Bayliner will make Brazil the center for its cruiser business but will suspend the brand’s cruiser sales and production outside of South America, leaving Sea Ray to represent Brunswick in the cruiser segment in North America.

The Bayliner pilothouse is a well desinged boat, fairly efficient fuel consumption. Wife likes it.
A lot of good equipment (robotic gel coaters, robotic routers) can be had cheap.
But what the hell would you make?
“Wife likes it.” THAT is the most important factor in buying a boat, at least it was with my purchase of a 28’ Rinker Express Cruiser.
I have been on a Bayliner pilothouse and they are quite nice... good luck.
I have a 28’ Rinker Express Cruiser. Gas was less than $2 when I bought it new. It now costs me $100 every time I take her out. The biggest mistake I have ever made was not buying a sailboat, such as a Hunter.
Brunswick is in trouble...they closed a few plants in the past 3 1/2 years and they sold BAJA to Fountain Boats (which then went bankrupt).
The Boating Industry (since I’m in it) is in trouble since ZERO got into the White Hut. Genmar Marine went bankrupt and it almost caused Larson Boats to go out of business. Larson is celebrating its 100th year this year.
A lot of companies in the marine industry are shutting down. With Zero ruining - er running (sorry) - the economy, I’ll be amazed that boating will be allowed if Zero gets re-elected!
The company that makes HUNTER SAILBOATS closed in bankruptcy! Someone bought it thou!!
Boating is great for the family to get away from 'normal' life. I don't allow the kids to bring video games when we go boating. They don't mind< since they can see MANATEES up close and we can talk about what bothering us.
Chaparral Vista 27 here. who cares about $$$ when it comes to enjoying the family!

That makes me so sad! We loved that boat. Teak flying seats, teak cabin. Maybe someday again.
We used sail near the Channel Islands. We frequently would have dolphins bow riding with us! It was lovely!
We’re looking to buy a Nordhavn 40. We’ve looked at five Nordhavn the past two months. We’re trying to decide between two of them.. The broker I’m working with told us to offer 30% off on the asking price to start with. He said the only boats selling now are the million dollar plus boats.

Well, the cost of gas bothers me, but I fork out the bucks and I completely agree with the value of spending time on the boat with my family and friends. We ALL love being on the water.
We don’t have Manatees where we live, but we get to view the Orca playing in our waters. ;>)
And I have a Gulfstar 43 for sail. Center cockpit, ketch. New everything the past two yeas.
That was one our concerns when we sold our 330 Sea Ray. Then when gas went to 5 bucks a gallon at the marina, that was the final decision. We were pretty fortunate to find a buyer as soon as we did. It helped that I was OCD about the upkeep..
I expect massive regs on the boating industry and or water ways if ahole is reelected.
