OSLO The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded its 2012 peace prize on Friday to the European Union, saying it had contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation across the continent.
With the body wrestling with the most severe financial crisis in its history over the single euro currency, the award surprised some people.
The announcement came against a global backdrop of conflict, with civil war in Syria threatening to spill across the region, the Afghanistan war grinding into a second decade and earlier hopes of a new era of tranquillity in the Middle East largely abandoned.

Seriously they need to just stop giving out the award...
I saw this on twitter and thought it was an Onion started joke.
I wonder if they will use the the prize money to bail out Greece, Spain or Italy...
Surrendering to the religion of peace is their definition of kinetic peace. They are fostering their own destruction.
“for instance. It started in the U.S. and we had to deal with it.”
By accepting US TARP funds and trillions in secret Fed reserve money? But I guess it’s fair, after those wily American homebuyers took advantage of European bankers with credit default swaps and derivatives. Those London and Euro bankers and others simply werent up to the sophistication of a suprime mortgage. They naturally thought that meant, “ok”.
They should have given Obama his bookend prize before he gets fired. (Or maybe they are so delusional they think he is going to win)
Wait until the economics prize is awarded to the European Central Bank - then you know that they are really, really on the brink.
:-)
Boy was I wrong, I thought Lady Gaga had it wrapped up!
I got that Nobel back in 1976.
Nigel Farage is going to have a field day with this.
Talk about repeatedly demonstrating your own irrelevance.
Within ten years, the EU will be reduced to a footnote in the history books.
And much violence in Europe and the Middle East and possibly Asia will be directly attributed to this little experiment of attempting to subordinate sovereign nations to the dictates of central banking and the fiat-based monetary policy that is the core of their existence.
But behind the celebrations, a typical EU turf war broke out between Mr Barroso, Mr Van Rompuy and Martin Schulz, the president of the European Parliament, over which EU president should collect the prize.
What a peace project!!!
In a bid to settle the squabble, Cecilia Malmstrom, Sweden's European Commisisoner, suggested on Twitter that sending 27 childrenヤ from each of the EU countries to Oslo would be the solution.
;-)
What a sham.
Hasn’t there been talk in Sweden by the Nobel foundation to stop Norway from handing out the prize due to breaking the terms of Nobel’s testament.
Anyhow, on the current tracjectory, the religion of peace will finally be acknowledged in 2013 with a Nobel :)
That will be next year. Let’s see if the Swedish National Bank has the good idea of handing out the Economics prize (in memory of Alfred Nobel) to......wait for it.....
Mario Draghi, the head of the ECB for saving the euro.
That would be just excellent. /s
Personally I think they should stop handing out anything but the sciences prizes. (And as for the Norwegian Committee, well, it is actually quite fun to see how they try to make themselves into the laughingstock of the world year after year.)
:-)
If current attitudes prevail, in 100 years , the EU will no longer exist.. It will have been absorbed into the Global Caliphate it so eagerly sets the table for with its own misguided policies. So Party ON, Idiots!
I heard a discussion of European journalists this evening where they agreed that it was a good idea. EU, they concluded, will never start a war, unable as it has been with other things to accomplish anything of the sort through its commissions, committees and bureaucracies.
