Back during the 1973 oil crisis, we burned very little gas waiting in line. We'd just shut our cars down and, as space allowed, help hand push each other forward. Worked well.

And it wasn't a question of having the time you had to wait -- there was no option. It simply took as long as it took. I managed to knit a rather spiffy poncho and make several new friends during these marathon wait and push sessions.
