Is Paul Ryan fit to be president -- the unspoken question at the vice presidential debate
Fox News ^ | October 12, 2012 | Dr. Keith Ablow

Posted on 10/12/2012 9:45:16 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

It was all psychology Thursday night at the vice presidential debate. The unspoken issue—about which nary a word was spoken—was really, in my opinion, all that mattered. Sigmund Freud himself would have enjoyed watching.

Coming on the heels of a presidential debate in which challenger Mitt Romney outdistanced President Obama, leaving him to chase Romney in the polls, the bulk of the American electorate really only had one question left: If Mitt Romney were, tragically, to die in office, would Paul Ryan be able to take over and be a credible president of the United States?

That unconscious question—which I believe is the last one voters needed to answer before delivering the White House to Governor Romney—was answered by Ryan with a resounding “yes” Thursday night. Whether one agrees or disagrees with his policies, whether one is Democrat or Republican, few people would say that Paul Ryan lacks the knowledge base or gravitas or commitment to be our commander in chief.

Even Joe Biden seemed to know that that was the question of the night, and the only one that really mattered much. When Biden quipped, “Oh, now you’re Jack Kennedy,” after Ryan mentioned the former president, his tone sounded less derisive than it did alarmed, and with good reason.

Yes, Mr. Vice President, Paul Ryan, so young and so sure of himself and so convinced that America can be the greatest it has ever been, does evoke memories of Jack Kennedy.

And, yes, last night, looking at you and Ryan together on the stage, there was just a hint of the Kennedy-Nixon debate when one man looked tired and wasn’t terribly likeable (Nixon/Biden) and the other looked fresh and new and full of ideals and not unkind (Kennedy/Ryan)....

Plugs rhymes with smug.

I figure Obama picked Biden for VP as a form of insurance.

He knows he is safe from the crazies as long as they know Biden is next in line.

Some may argue that Paul Ryan won the debate last night by only a few percentage points. Others may say the debate was a tie. But, psychologically, it was a massive win for the Romney/Ryan ticket, erasing the last unconscious doubt potentially in the way of their victory.

he's right. That's the whole point of a VP debate. We need to know that the other guy on th eticket can be President if needed and Ryan passed that test with flying colors.

Paul Ryan exudes confidence, trust and honesty. Butt-in Biden exudes used car salesman.

On a more practical note, imagine Ryan as the next president after Romney.

This would mean it would be important to help Ryan maintain his conservative credentials and ideas while VP.

There are times when Washington seems to be designed to corrupt and water down the philosophical underpinnings and core values of politicians.

If Romney has a successful term or two as POTUS, Ryan may be a shoe-in as his replacement, assuming Republican party leadership perfidy doesn’t take him out. And Ryan may be situated to really get the conservative ball rolling.

I was VERY impressed with Paul Ryan last night.
He knows how to hold his composure. He knows how to be quiet when the opposition is hell bent on making a fool of itself.
He knows when not to stoop below his level.

I saw him as being able to respect President Romney, and working with him.
I saw a young man taking his future position seriously.
I COULD see him taking hold of the reigns should anything happen to the sitting President.

I feel good today. Kinda feels like being born again, again. LOL
My mom, who never donates (because of financial reasons), donated today.

The debate wasn’t a realistic test of Ryan’s ability to assume the top spot. If President Ryan was confronted with some hypothetical individual acting like Biden did his secret service detail would wrestle him to the floor, cuff him and haul him off to the mental hospital for observation.

” If President Ryan was confronted with some hypothetical individual acting like Biden did his secret service detail would wrestle him to the floor, cuff him and haul him off to the mental hospital for observation.”

Not so sure about that. Misbehaving foreign leaders are part of a president’s landscape. Khrushchev, Putin, Chavez, Ameninutjob, DeGaulle, and on and on. Some presidents bow to them. Others politely tell them they are full of ...

Ablow is one of those docs who actually believes in the concept of good and evil, right and wrong. He does not mince words and calls em as he sees em. I have always enjoyed his thoughts

Thanks for this.

As I stated on another thread today:

Considering that one of these men might, on a moment's notice, be required to sit with the leader of another nation contesting for liberty, every citizen who watched Biden should be seriously concerned.

Actually, in my opinion, there was little difference between Biden's performance and that of Obama, in that both were disrespectful and derisive. One's expression showed a sullen, resentful, petulant attitude. The other displayed an equally appalling disconnect between the seriousness of the discussion and emotional stability and expression.

Both were arrogant and may have underestimated the innate intelligence of millions of citizen/voters of the United States of America and their ability to recognize the difference between bravado and substance of character, respect for others, and seriousness of the challenges to America's liberty.

Reading that your Mom, who never donates because of financial reasons, donated today, made me teary. It says she has hope in Romney/Ryan. Ever since Paul Ryan was chosen by Mitt Romney I have felt that every mother of sons could relate to his Mom and how proud she must be. His integrity and earnestness to be a part of saving our Country really shine thru. Your post was very well written; you did a great job of capturing his very fine qualities. I especially liked the one of knowing “when not to stoop below his level”. You are very, very perceptive.
