Catholic and Protestant leaders gathered at Morgan State University Wednesday night for a prayer service calling on voters to approve Maryland's DREAM Act next month.
The DREAM Act, which is Question 4 on this year's ballot, would require community colleges charge in-state tuition rates to undocumented immigrant students who have graduated from high school in Maryland, and who can prove that they or their parents have paid taxes in Maryland for at least three years.
If the student graduates from a community college, they would then be eligible for in-state tuition at a four-year institution.
Archbishop William Lori of the Archdiocese of Baltimore was among the religious leaders who participated in the service.
Critics say the measure condones illegal immigration.
Archbishop Lori says the Catholic Church's support of the issue is in keeping with Church's teaching about showing compassion for children.
Lori told WBAL News that many of the students who came to the U.S. illegally as children came here "through no fault of their own."
He notes either the students or their parents have jobs, and pay taxes.
"It seems to me that it is in the interest of these young people, and the common good, provide them with a good education, so they can become productive citizens," Lori added.
Presbyterian, Lutheran, Baptist and Episcopal leaders participated in the service.
Rosalita Jayjay, an undocumented immigrant from Liberia, also participated in service.
The 21-year-old student, who came to the U.S. to be with her mother and sister seven years ago, attends Community College of Baltimore County, Essex, where she is studying nursing.
"We contribute towards the economy. We pay taxes, but we are limited in our educational opportunities. Voting for Question 4, it breaks every limits, and provides education for those immigrants in Baltimore that are here," Jayjay told WBAL News.
The Maryland General Assembly approved the bill last year. Opponents successfully collected enough petitions to get the issue on this year's ballot.

A young person who was the top student in his state in Nigeria wants to come here to study to be a doctor. He, too, will need to pay out of state tuition. Another young person brought here illegally from India at an early age by his mother, an immigration lawyer, will get instate tuition.
Preachers who can find the equity in that situation are already in some trouble with the Lord ~ today they'll come together in a meeting where the solemnly sign their pact with Satan.
Preaching and ministering is an easy job compared to many others. You don’t have to be intelligent, in fact it is better if you are not. So basically you have a lot of low IQ to average IQ men of faith wanting to flood America with uneducated 3rd worlders while the economy sucks. How stupid is this!!!

Lori is speaking for himself in making this prudential statement, not the Church, and he certianly isn't being faithful to Church teaching on the issue of immigration while dismissing the 7th and 10th Commandments.

I have no empathy with these clergy, whatever their stripe, if they are not also out there actively supporting victims of crimes perpetrated by illegals.
And not one of them is, I suspect.

However, at the Last Judgement, our Lord will ask all priests to account for the souls He placed under their care. If a priest taught politics instead of ministering to the souls of his people, it will not go well for him.

People in the country illegally are not obeying the laws and have no right to expect the same benefits as those that are.
It is RACIST to impose SLAVE WAGES ON LEGAL IMMIGRANTS, by promoting ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION.
It is not Christian to give something to someone that broke the rules and laws to receive it....over one who followed the rules and laws
Giving in-state tuition to Illegal Aliens is not only criminal...it is immoral. We do not allow children of bank robbers or burglars to keep the money and goods their parents have stolen...children of Criminal Illegal Aliens should not benefit from their parents lawbreaking.
It is also a burden on taxpayers...as any state-funded institution covers at least 2/3 of all tuition costs of each individual student (why in-state tuition is much less than out-of-state). Not only taxpayers foot the bill of Illegals....that admission spot in the university or college given to Illegal Aliens could have gone to a US citizen or a legal immigrant....possibly your own child
But they cry like babies when the HHS mandate is imposed on them.
How can an illegal pay income taxes?
Is this sort of like the argument about “for the health of the mother” in abortion? IOW, it’s really irrelevant?
I will not disagree. Historically this has been true for the top men in all religions except Islam which is a hot mess
I was thinking specifically about Orthodox Priests.
In an Orthodox ordination, the Priest candidate is told to guard the sanctity of the Holy Sacrament, and that he will be responsible at the Last Judgment for the souls of all his parishioners.
When I think of my countless sins, I know how awesome it would be to be responsible for my salvation. And I’m only ONE parishioner out of thousands!!!! What about those who quit Orthodoxy, or all Christianity?
As for islam. the majority Sunni branch says that they have no clergy. However, they have imams, as well as leaders who have a large following. Then there are Shia islam’s ayatollahs. Because islam is so fatalistic about an individual’s salvation, none of these leaders has responsibility for the salvation of anyone. But they lead their followers into grave sins instead, including mass murder of innocents.
