Gloria Steinem: 'The Home in Our Country Is Single Most Dangerous Place for a Woman’ By Penny Starr October 12, 2012

(CNSNews.com) – Speaking at an event to mark the 40th anniversary of Ms. Magazine, co-founder and feminist activist Gloria Steinem said that because of domestic violence “the home in our country is the single most dangerous place for a woman” and that ending domestic violence is “the key to world peace.”

“We can understand, you know, where it is we wish to go and also reveal more clearly where it is we are now,” Steinem said at the National Press Club on Thursday.

“For instance, domestic violence, or original violence, has diminished somewhat, but it is true right now that if you added up all the women murdered by their husbands or boyfriends in this country since 9/11 and then took all the people killed in 9/11, all the Americans killed in Iraq and in Afghanistan, there are more women who have been murdered by their husbands and boyfriends than were collectively killed in those situations,” she said.

“It’s also still true that the average prison sentence for a partner, a male partner who kills his female partner, is less than for a woman who kills in self-dense in the home,” Steinem said.

“It’s still true that the home in our country is the single most dangerous place for a woman – not the street,” Steinem said.

The number of people killed by terrorists in the United States on Sept. 11, 2001 was 2,977. The number of troops killed in Afghanistan total 2,125 and 4,475 in Iraq, according to the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. That would bring the total for the attack and the two wars to 9,577 deaths.

Spousal abuse(which goes both ways) is a problem, but Ms Steinem (who married not long ago) is ham-handedly branding the home as a dangerous place. Massive numbers of women find refuge, love and safety in the home.

It's pretty safe in this house with mr. hummingbird.

I'm sorry Gloria S. and her abused sisters have not known bliss in their homes.

Really, I am sorry.

And, I am grateful for the sanctuary of our home. I wish all could have the same.

To Gloria - Thanks for speaking out on the issue of abused women. Your statisics are probably low due to the fact that many women feel such shame in situations like that, and are reluctant to speak out or live in denial.

They like to talk about “domestic violence” rather than wife beating because so very few husbands hit their wives compared to live-in boyfriends. Always watch how the left manipulates words and don’t fall for their tricks.

Gloria Steinam must be feeling left out of the conversation these days. What better way to elbow your way into the town hall than to make a jump-the-shark idiotic assertion.

Gloria, honey, you need to spend a year or so in rural Africa, Egypt, Iran, or North Korea. It would reinvigorate and clarify your thinking, which appears to be trapped in 1960's amber. Or, how about hard labor on a subsistence farm for a couple of years? You'd learn to appreciate much more how that arugala found its way onto your bone ware.

If the home is so dangerous, then maybe its time for men to stay home and face the danger while women go off to be the majority of our cops, firefighters, infantrymen, cab drivers, steel workers, miners, farmers, electricians, and all the other traditionally male jobs that try to kill us every day.

The reality is that people of both sexes abuse each other in relationships all the time, and in my view the word ‘love’ is too often cheap and overused. Women abuse men just as often as the opposite, it's just that the method of abuse is different.

I watched my mother belittle my father for almost all of their marriage, telling me recurrently since I was probably 6 or 7 years old that she never should have married my father, other men were interested in her, he was lazy (he worked third-shift in a factory as skilled labor for over 35years and was never unemployed his entire life), etc. etc. She would belittle him to his face recurrently. He came from an abusive home himself, and had physical scars as a result, so even though he had inner strength, he did not have it in him to fight her - and wouldn't leave her. All the while, he pretty much defended her against any and all criticism.

When he died, she wouldn't let him come home from the hospital, and she couldn't even find it in herself to sit there and hold his hand while he laid in a hospital bed dying. He had told me when I visited a month before this (I don't live in the same state) that “I think your mother is getting tired of this. I should probably just die.”. All of this after over 50 years of marriage. To me, she abused him. But I'm sure Gloria wouldn't care.

Domestic abuse is a real problem and needs to be addressed, especially with stiff penalies/prosecution of offenders.

That said, as with any social problems, radical liberal/feminists would likely bring their own solutions to the table, to wit:

A. Most domestic abuse perpetrators are men, so of course “all you have to do” is ban men who live in homes or since the home is dangerous, “simply” ban homes containing men (take your choice).

B. Of course, you could always deport men (and only men) to uninhabited islands, thereby reducing incidents of abuse against women by 98%.

C. Require men to take large doses of tranquilizers daily
and ban all sports/games of aggression as a two-pronged approach.

D. The final solution is to amend the constitution (called the Unequal Rights Amendment) to allow for making eunuchs of any man found (by the government) to be a high percentage risk of being an abuser.

Problem solved.

because of domestic violence “the home in our country is the single most dangerous place for a woman” and that ending domestic violence is “the key to world peace.”

These Leftist utopian idiots get on my nerves.

Someone is always spouting off about achieving world peace. World peace is only achievable by the extinction of the human species. War is part of human nature. War has existed as long as humans have been human (if you believe in evolution it existed in the pre-human species as well).

World peace is a political catch phrase that is intended to give your argument infinite weight. “Oh, who can argue with the need to achieve WORLD PEACE?”

Sorry folks I am not buying your line of crap. If you bring world peace in to your argument you have lost my attention, my respect and as far as I am concerned you lost the debate.

Excellent but sad post.

The fairer sex can be utterly cruel.

Just watch any housewives reality show or ask any woman who loves men who she prefers for company...men or women?

my mother was that way too...she got angry when he got sick and was dying...and wouldn’t let him die at home as he wished but rather in a care facility tended to by strangers..and me and my girlfriend

now when she died...oh no...at home with 24 hour help...in her manor bedroom of 900 sq feet holding court...lol...which was her no doubt..regal and tough but self centered

as a son ...the eldest you are just caught in the middle wanting to do right by both but if you don't have POA you have no say...I did have POA for her ...she knew that even if I resented her handling of my dad's death that I would not betray her....reason she didn't let my dad die at home?..........she didn't want strangers in the home 24/7 for a month or so...but it was just fine at her turn

anyhow...I love women but sometimes their orbits run way too tight and they are prone to drama...there is no question of that

and it might explain why things have always been how things have always been

i think a feminine-masculine culture somewhere north of Taliban but far less than what Gloria envisions is the right one

one the other hand...my wife is very maternal and fairly selfless and very very empathetic...can't get thru one sermon without tears..I am lucky..hardly a fembot bone in her body

Haven't read the article, and don't intend to, but based on the title, I'd say Gloria has her own set of "facts and data" and if they show the truth of the title, my guess is her liberated woman is a danger to herself in her own home ... an' we ain't talking KIDS yet, neither.

Honey, you may be able to use a hammer and screw driver, but you may not have enough futuristic 3D vision to determine a 'nailer' should go 'here' and a ledger board will hold that 'there'.

My wife is the hardest working human (including me) I've seen in a 5'2", 100 lb piece of God's work, but she saw me do some dry wall patching once.

I came home one day to find a hollow core door we rarely use and is out of sight, but used to have a couple of broom handle holes (re-enacting the fight from El Cid) .... PATCHED with mud, paper, then mud again ... to make these neat humps on a wooden door .... and PAINTED.

Of COURSE she smiled and I beamed with pride when she showed me when I came home from work.

I didn't say anything to destroy that sense of accomplishment 'cause of the place and purpose of the door and patch.

I HAVE however replaced a couple of pictures that a little tiny nail put into dry wall had let go.

And I made the mistake of showing her how handy that green tie wire stuff for the garden is ....

Yep, Gloria ... YOUR kind of all alone woman is indeed dangerous if a man is not there to protect her from herself.
