My son had a Romey/Ryan sign in his front yard; husband went over to get his mail, check on his house (he works on oil rig for 3 weeks on, 3 weeks off)...and someone had spray painted the sign with black spray paint...
So far no one has touched our sign; our neighborhood is a mixture of Obama & Romney, so far folks have been respectfall towards one another....
I think what the guy used was hotter, perhaps 24v with plenty of juice but not enough to injure. By the way, I got a severe shock and burned flesh from a 12v car system (my own that I was hot-wiring as a teen). You can pump a lot of wattage even in low volt systems (my stun gun uses a 9v battery).
Take some mesh wire and fasten a sheet to the front of a sign, and another to the back - no contact between them. The sign will still be very visible. Wire up the two sides to a heavy-duty bug zapper electronics. Now when someone grabs the sign (near impossible to grab just one side), they'll get an unhealthy jolt. Smear the post with black roofing tar. Aso smear the top and side edges. Not only will the culprit get shocked, but they'll be soiled with near-impossible to clean-off tar.
My block has an unwritten rule, no signage. Most people on the block are decent older folks and respect each other. No signs, no arguments. I've been here over 25 years and have yet to see any signage. (We do have a lot of U.S.A. flags on display, that's it.)
Interesting to me that I have seen not one Obama/Biden yard sign and only a couple of bumper stickers in very progressive WA state. I have seen a few RR signs in yards but other than that all I have seen is signs from people running for local elections. I’m amazed.

ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. Even the Irish immigrants who went to London as American athletes during the Olympics at the turn of the century told the flag bearer that if it bowed before the Queen during the ceremonies, they would beat him senseless. The American flag never bows to anyone, anything, anyone.
I just hate liberals and they deserve every misery they caused us for the past 4 years when they voted this kenyan klown into office. Never even prayed for them but that’s for other Freepers to do, I won’t. You don’t hear us praying for satan, do you?
Glue some Treble Hooks to the back of the top part of the sign. When you hear the screams you will know who has been doing it.
