Food fight in the school lunchroom

They may be good for you, but some students are having a tough time swallowing the new, healthier school lunches.

Across the United States, students are protesting new federal guidelines that have school lunches packing more fruits and vegetables, fewer carbohydrates and less meat.

About 120 students at Jordan Middle School boycotted the lunch program to show their distaste, as did students in Wisconsin, New Jersey and Michigan.

"The federal government is trying to solve a problem that every kid doesn't have," said Jacob Taxdahl, an eighth-grade football player at Jordan Middle School who started the three-day boycott via a Facebook page. "They're trying to solve obesity in America, but not every kid is obese."

It says the new meals have fewer carbs, and less meat. Less meat presumably means less protein. And presumably they won’t want to increase the fat content either. So, what the hell is in this stuff? More fibre (i.e. indigestible stuff)?

Two elementary school teachers in Starbucks the other day:

Kids get a choice of hot meal or sandwich. If the hot meal turns out to be inedible, they can’t go back for a sandwich.

One of the teachers said she buys them the sandwich if they have no more money left. Other teacher said you’re not supposed to do that; it’s not a matter of money.

They were both appalled at what has happened. The kids are little and make mistakes. I would guess especially at the start of the school year, when they’re unfamiliar with the cooked “food.”

Did you or anyone else here ever like your school lunches? Anyone who did probably thinks Arbys is good food.

You are a true idiot. You complain about govt intrusion into food when it changes the menu, not understanding that the food always came from govt.

First a non sequitur and then an ad-hominim. Have you been taking debate lessons from Joe Biden? I think you must have been looking in the mirror with your last posting. As magnificent an example of projection vomiting as I have seen lately.

One of my mom's friends was a pilot captured by the Germans in WW2... by that time Germany was pretty low on supplies even for its own troops so they put sawdust in the bread made for POWs to bulk it up.

Maybe that's Michelle's plan.

My mom was a young girl in Austria during WW2, whenever she thought we kids weren’t being properly grateful for our blessings she would tell us her story about making stew out of the neighbor’s cat. I really got in trouble when we went to visit members of our church and when I saw they had a cat, I casually mentioned my mom once made stew from her neighbor’s cat...oops

I noticed you could not answer the question. The food was always from the govt. It is not a new intrusion. It is a menu change.

Kids are spoiled crybabies. And you are backing them. Congrats.

I think you and No Truce are both kind of right. Yes if its a public school the food effectively always came from the government. BUT, the question of intrusion still arises because of the motive for the menu change. Sure in the past it was bulk and not high quality, but at least they responded to market forces. The school cafetaria served food that students wanted, (or at least what they thought we wanted). Now they are serving food that they think is “good” for us, irrespective of what we want. They may be right in thinking the new menus are better, more nutritious and so on, and it is true that the obesity epidemic is a worrying development, but there is a world of difference from saying you “should” try and eat healthier, to saying you “must” eat healthier.
