Katrina vanden Heuvel: How Romney’s extreme policies insult us all
Washington Post ^ | October 15, 2012 | By Katrina vanden Heuvel

Posted on 10/15/2012 10:52:13 AM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer

At first glance, it might seem as if Mitt Romney’s path — from voting in the 1992 Democratic presidential primary to being the 2012 Republican presidential nominee — was linear. But over the past, winding, 20 years, Romney has held every possible view on every possible issue — often at the same time. When it comes to policy, he’s been downright promiscuous.

Jolted with a fresh shot of post-debate energy, Romney is just doing more of what he’s always done — whatever it takes to get elected. This comes naturally because he is, fundamentally, a cipher. The only thing he believes is whatever is politically expedient in that given moment. And right now, he needs to be a hard-liner to get the GOP base to the polls — and a moderate to appeal to those last few independent voters.

His solution is to sign on to the fanatical policies of the extreme right, and then duck and cover to confuse independents about where he really stands.

Enough is enough. Romney’s campaign has made for great “Daily Show” segments. But we’re three weeks away from determining the next leader of the United States. And at this point, Romney is just insulting Americans — our intelligence, our values, our democracy — with the campaign he is running. Tuesday’s town hall debate is an opportunity for voters — and President Obama — to articulate the real consequences that Romney’s real policies will have on real people’s lives. So let’s hope that, at the debate, voters will finally demand that Romney get real.

Will anybody talk about the real consequences that Obama's real policies will have on real people’s lives?

Notice how it’s almost always the same backgrounds with these people? East Coast, privileged, private schools, jobs in government or media or nonprofits, married pretty much the same, disproportionately Jewish by birth or marriage. Just the same-o, same-o. They don’t have a clue how real people live. Just phoney liberalism from their ivory towers, safe and sound, away from the constituencies they publicly say they support, but privately loathe.

To this poor fool, Communism is not extreme.

The destruction of free speech is not extreme.

Murdering babies is not extreme.

The illegal theft of wealth is not extreme.

Codifying sodomy into law as marriage is not extreme.

Treason by selling out to foreign enemies is not extreme.

If she wants to commit suicide, she should do so and leave the grown-ups to try and salvage what is left of a great nation.

Catholics being forced to pay for contraction.

I hadn't heard of that - they can't stand for that - they WON'T stand for that!

That couldn't be more wrong and shouldn't be implemented !

“He is further to the left than Obama on some issues”

Name one.

Any one will do, as long as it’s documentable, and not just something you read that was attributed to him.

President Harry Truman, Governor Al Smith and Vice President Hubert Humphrey would no doubt be Tea Partiers were they alive today. That’s how far left they’ve gone. Heck, Adlai Stevenson would be a moderately conservative Republican!

Romney was always my last choice in the primaries. As bad as he might be, could he be any worse than Obama? At least Romney is not a black-militant, Moslem Uber-Marxist.

The fact that the WaPo is still in business is what insults me.

Just when exactly have they provided us with an intellect-level analysis of anything?

Hahahahaha! Written like she’s never heard of an individual named “Barack Hussein Obama” and his failed record. On my worst day I’d be 10X the president that Mr. Obama is, and so would you! I don’t expect Gov. Romney to be President Reagan, but I’ll bet you a steak dinner that he’ll be more conservative than both Bushes, Ford, Nixon or Hoover.

Gay issues. He claimed he is more pro-gay than Ted Kennedy. “I think the gay community needs more support from the Republican Party and I would be a voice in the Republican Party to foster antidiscrimination efforts.” He also wrote a letter to Log Cabin Republicans saying he’d make “equality for gays and lesbians a mainstream concern.”

Probably - she is consistently an Obama defender. She has called Romney a communist tyrant who wants to take away her right to vote but argued Obama would at least protect her right to vote. Now she quotes Ted Kennedy to attack Romney.
