The IDF will begin to draft hareidi-religious 16 to 19-year-olds, but "will wait till after elections" for 20 to 28 year olds, says Defense Minister Ehud Barak.
The IDF will send out the orders within the next few weeks, summoning about 15,000 hareidi-religious Jews for interviews at induction centers, Barak said at a Knesset committee hearing on Monday.
The IDF's Netzach Yehuda combat battalion and the Shachar high-tech training unit were two of the hareidi service programs Barak said would be expanded to meet the increased recruitment of hareidi-religious Israelis.
But many 19-year-old hareidi-religious young men have already received draft notices; some who did not show up to induction centers the first time around received a second notice and a phone call.
"My son wanted to finish his rabbinical training and get his semicha (ordination) before starting his army service," one mother who lives in a northern Negev community told Arutz Sheva in an interview Monday evening. "When we got the notice we were very upset. All of his plans were turned upside down, and while he is still in yeshiva, he now has to leave by the end of the month and go to a base.
"I understand others who say everyone should serve; others want to go to college and also have to put their learning off because of this. But how come our neighbors down the block didn't also get such notices? I can tell you: they are smart enough to marry their sons off immediately -- by the time they turn 18."
Barak added that due to upcoming elections, he would temporarily refrain from implementing the draft for 20 to 28 year olds who currently are learning in yeshivas on military deferrals through the Tal Law, which expired this past August. .....

Good...they should be drafted. Skipping a daven or two a week wont kill them. Israel needs more soldiers now than even, and it will shut the secular creeps up.
We clearly got the wrong Barak
Ruh-roh.
I cannot imagine anyone who has read the Torah to be opposed to participating in the defense of Israel. Where do they get this idea?
I am Orthodox and did 16 years.
I still serve in the reserves and fly back every year for 2 months and sometimes more. I keep current in all my flight time and jog and lift weights at 5:00 6 days a week.
Man exist to serve on the ground and in heaven.
Part of this is doing mitzvah with machine guns.
Depends on the group.
Some pre-date modern Israel and do not recognize the secular state.
Some are draft-dodgers and welfare queens (Shas party).
Some believe they can do more good praying and learning than using their bodies to defend.
Oh boy.
The big war must be near. It is going to get really hot.
Likud no longer need religious party support to remain in government? No more billboards with the rabbi wagging his finger at passersby?
There are those who oppose the very idea of a secularist Jewish state, who believe that it’s against the Torah. The Jewish State in its beginnings was strongly anti-religious. Even Zeev Jabotinsky, who tried heroically to save the Jews of Poland over their own objections, opposed giving anyone the vote unless they cut off their beard and peyot. Until recently, publishing and broadcasting in Yiddish was forbidden. And then there were the heinous things that the Labor government did to the Eastern refugees in order to secularize their children, and the brutal beatings that the mounted Druze cops give to Chareidi demonstrators. In brief, there’s a lot of bad blood.
Demographically, Israel has to draft the haredi to keep its armed forces fully manned.

Machine gun mitzvah, I like it.
They want to die, we shouldn’t help them?
They're right about that, but to my mind they don't even understand the implementation of the Torah they intend to keep! This is particularly as regards the Sh'mita about which I have written a book discussing why the oral tradition was deliberately and rationally circumscribed re the founding verse. Ex 23:11 was avoided entirely.

I've read both of rabbi Antelman's books. Sanhedrin 98a makes for a poor excuse for evil. Look at the idolatry in the Israeli Supreme Court building. It's bad. Still, the Torah demands that the people should pray for their leaders and defend the innocent.
In brief, theres a lot of bad blood.
And for good reason, ever since the sinking of the Atalena.
I’m not endorsing the Neturei Karta view, just presenting it, such as it is.
Bless you for your service to Israel! :-)
