Billionaire businessman and one-time presidential candidate H. Ross Perot on Tuesday endorsed GOP candidate Mitt Romney.
Perot, whose 1992 independent bid for the presidency captured close to 19 percent of the vote, praised Romney in an op-ed in the Des Moines Register, saying the GOP nominee would restrain the growth of government and keep it from acting as a brake on economic growth.
The national debt has been a signature issue for the 82-year old Perot and his endorsement comes after an interview earlier this month where he declined to back a presidential candidate, accusing both candidates of doing little to address the nations fiscal challenges.
In his Tuesday op-ed, Perot says that in the 2012 presidential race, the stakes are nothing less than our position in the world, our standard of living at home and our constitutional freedoms.
We cant afford four more years in which debt mushrooms out of control, our government grows and our military is weakened, Perot says.
Perot accuses Obama of shouldering the nation with unsustainable debt: In the last four years during Obamas presidency, hes added around $5 trillion to our national debt, more than any previous president.
It is this massive deficit spending that threatens to undermine our future standard of living, he adds.
But the Texas businessman cautioned that efforts to rein government spending should not weaken the nations military. Even as we have engaged in runaway domestic spending, the country has been put on the path to massive cuts in the defense budget.
History teaches that the price of military weakness always exceeds the price of preparedness, Perot continues. And yet at a moment when turbulence is sweeping critical regions of the world, we are increasingly unprepared.
In explaining his support for Romney, Perot touts the former Massachusetts governors record working with a Democratic-legislature and his tenure as head of private equity firm Bain Capital.
He has spent most of his career in the private sector. He understands how jobs are created. He understands how government can get in the way of that process, says Perot.
Perot had backed Romney in 2008 over the eventual GOP presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).
Welcome aboard, Ross.
What other choice does he/we have?
There is none.
We cannot continue on the path Obama has placed us on.
History will record this as the most corrupt, lying, weakest our country has ever been through. Certainly Obama who held so much promise has been a total failure and has set back race relationships in this country by 50 years.
Thanks for Clinton, asswipe. Remember that sucking sound? It wasn’t coming from Mexico, it was coming from under the president’s desk.
Well Thank You very much Ross.
Now that 30% of the current voters do not know who you are. That will make a BIG difference.
/s
Perot is saying please don’t “Perot” Barack Obama into a second term. That seems the least he could do given his role in “Peroting” Clintbilly into power.
Those are the newer ones.
Perot was also quoted as saying: “That giant sucking sound you hear is Obama, sucking at his job”. j/k
It’s like the dog that chased the car. When the dog caught the car, it peed on the hubcap. It didn’t have anything constructive to do.
Must have been a small disgusting rock they turned over to find this jug-eared martian. Who knew (of cared) that he was still around.
Let’s put a chicken back in every pot.
That’s hugh. Maybe even series.
What other choice does he/we have?
Ron Paul (if he’s still running)
Twenty years too late, maybe. We really could have done WITHOUT the “Former Occupant of the Oval Office, 1993-2001”.
While not nearly as destructive as either Jimmy Carter or the Current Occupant, Clinton did nothing to maintain the dignity of the Office of the Presidency of the United States, a very powerful office in the world regardless of who occupies it. He misused the position shamefully, and as if it were his own personal suzerainty, without thought to consequence or legacy. Besides, it gave a platform to Herself, the Cold and Joyless, who has brought her own form of mischief to the world.
America paid an awfully high price for a personal feud betwee Ross Perot and George H.W. Bush. And I don’t think it had much to do with not being invited to a wedding, or whatever.
Good.
Perot ran twice.
He’s still alive?
Oh you mean that soon to be ex-congressman who says there is no difference between Obama and Romney? That Ron Paul?
I have a good idea what he was referring to but if one is to live by the sound bite, he is going to die by it as well.
Wonder if he’ll sue Beckel, for calling him an idiot on The Five last night.
AMEN!
Ross, it is nap time, here is your blanket.
I have a different take on Perot in 1992.
Perot tapped into the complete disconnect Goerge Bush the Elder had with the Reagan Revolution. From March of 1991 to the summer of 1992, Bush had squandered a tremendously high approval rating after Gulf War I.
Perot tapped into the fear of the economic path we were on as a country.
As a result of Perot getting 19% of the vote, the GOP-E was scared sh#tless of what was a resurgence of the conservative wing of the GOP.
What we got was Newt Gingrich and the Contract with America in 1994, and for the first time in 40 years, a Republican majority in the House, in Jan. 1995.
Now, I will grant you that Perot in 1996 was a spoiler, however, in 1996 the GOP gave us Bob Dole when it was clear a second Clinton term would be a disaster for the country.
Without that Republican majority in the House in the 1990s Clinton would have had no “Clinton Economy”.
Without Reagan, we tend to forget how wishy washy and weak the GOP leadership was in the House and the Senate in 1970s and 1980s. Thank God for Reagan, who went over everyone’s head to the American people to save this country from economic and constitutional ruin.
What is still a mystery to me 20 years later is how the GOP rolled over and allowed a horrible candidate like Clinton to win. And then allowed it four years later.
I pray there is no such repeat of history in 2012, becasue, as Eric Nordstorm says “the Taliban is on the inside of the building”.
Your description of the Clintons is spot on.
Can’t watch the 5...they all talk at the same time.
Why not thank the real culprit, George "Read My Lips" Bush.
Perot was a symptom of the problem, not the cause.
Perot’s endorsement isn’t worth diddly squat.

Now look at this chart Larry. This is where we're headed with another 4 years of Obama.
Perot got almost 20 million votes in 1992. For the undecideds and Independents in that group, this will help push them toward Romney. The endorsement helps to some degree and in close states, we’ll take everything we can get.
I wonder if “Cher” will now switch her vote from Obama to Romney. /s
I did too. It was the first election I was old enough to vote in. I didn't like George Bush Sr. because he broke his "no new taxes" pledge and I didn't like Clinton, because he was...well Clinton. So I cast my first ever presidential vote for Ross Perot, and regretted it ever since.
He certainly has that right!
All true... but I also think Perot had a personal vendetta against Bush. I still think that was his primary goal - defeating Bush. Didn't matter who the Democrat candidate was.
If he wasn't he would be voting for Obama.
Clinton gave us Motor Voter which completely ruined the integrity of our elections, two USSC picks that have proven diastorous and a bilingual government. GHWB would have at least been better.
At least we won't have to deal with the obligatory question of 'don't ask don't tell'... liberals won that one and now in their mind it's 'settled forever'... no more questions about it - ever.
Excellent news.
The hard core undecided vote is approximately 5% if the voting public. They make up largely of people who voted for Obama in 2008, but also voted for George W. Bush and Ross Perot in previous elections.
