A high-ranking Port of Oakland official is in hot water for throwing down $4,500 in public funds for a party at a Houston strip club.
"Port commissioners take this matter very seriously," board President Gilda Gonzales said in a statement after their meeting.
Kwon's strip-club spending spree didn't come to port officials' attention until just recently. The timing is especially terrible for the port, which is in the midst of a protracted labor fight with maintenance and other workers over terms of a new contract.
Now, officials are scrambling to get a handle on the strip-club visit and to determine whether it was part of a broader pattern by Kwon of misuse of public money.
Kwon, maritime operations director since 2007, wasn't available for comment - he's in China attending another port conference.

Well our girls in Houston say, thank ya’ll Oakland. And after all, a port official spending like a drunken sailor really isn’t odd.
Doubt he was the one “blowing,” but you never know what people pay for.
I looked up his salary.
18 grand PER MONTH.
You’d think he could fund his own hooker and blow....
Just wondering if they should use the word “blow” in the same sentence as “Strip Club”?
Throwing money away at a strip club is more stimulative and honorable than throwing money at green energy boondoggles.
As a former drunken sailor, I must object to your characterization - we were spending our own money.
The obvious solution is for his bosses to go to Houston and inspect these strip clubs firsthand to determine whether the quality is worthy of such largesse...
if it were his money
That’s what Reagan said once. First bar on the right was my plan.
This thread is worthless without pictures.
Afterall, gotta make sure the public is getting their money’s worth.
(Please, please, no Helen photos...not even if she’s stripping.)
This shiny new Cruise Terminal has been empty for 3-1/2 years now.
The link is to a story by ABC-13 investigative reporter Wayne Dolcefino. After watching it being build, then sit idle for over two years, I called Wayne and told him he needed to do this story. And to my surprise, a couple of months later they did their story.
There. Fixed it.
I wonder what she means the take the matter very seriously?
Entitled beaurocrats are entitled to piss away money! Didn’t ya’ll get the memmo!?
As the English might say, “Bit of a cock-up, what?”
The same way as in the case of one of their officials being caught with narcotics, as in
“Here at the Port Authority, we take drugs pretty seriously.”
Thank God we have diligent public servants. At least they earning their pay. No wonder they get paid so much.
This happened four years ago. Sounds like somebody settling a score.
