In the runup to the second presidential debate, CNNs Candy Crowley declared that ... she would step in whenever she chose...
And boy did she, cutting off Republican Mitt Romney repeatedly and often throwing the floor to President Obama with an open let me give the president a chance here.
She even chose this question, directed to both men: I do attribute much of Americas economic and international problems to the failings and missteps of the Bush administration. Since both of you are Republicans, I fear the return to the policies of those years should you win this election. What is the biggest difference between you and George W. Bush, and how do you differentiate yourself from George W. Bush?
Ms. Crowley, who called Mr. Romneys selection of Rep. Paul Ryan as running mate a ticket death wish, asserted her unilateral power at the outset, telling the audience before the cameras went on that she planned to give the debate direction and ensure the candidates give answers to the questions.
After both candidates answered Question One, she blurted: Let me get a more immediate answer whatever that means. But when Mr. Romney sought to correct falsehoods told by the president, she cut him off: We have all these folks here. In the end, Mr. Obama would get 9 percent more time.
At Question Two, Mr. Obama, asked by Mr. Romney how much he had cut federal oil permits, took over the floor with Ms. Crowleys silent approval. Heres what happened, he said as he filibustered for a full minute. Mr. Romney sought to get the last word as the president had the question before but the moderator shut him down: It doesnt quite work like that.

Bill O’Reilly said Cathy would be fair. FAIL.
I think she realized now that she might have done more damage to 0bama than to Romney. When Anderson Cooper, her fellow CNN personality, tweeted that she was wrong on Libya, she knew that she crossed the line. While the low-info voters might see it differently, I think the damage is through two things: (1) It highlights 0bama's lie and would also be highlight of the second debate the way Biden's laughs were, and (2) It triggered the sense of fairness among the independents. Most Americans are for fair treatment in sport. When the referee blatantly biased for one team, people might feel compel to punish the referee by punishing the team she favored.
I think “step IN it” would be more accurate.
such a typical fem Lib slug
my community is full of these people
most have rainbow decals on their cars
This is why people don't watch the MSM anymore.
Crowley's dirty work didn't help much.
Frank Luntz focus group of mostly of former Obama voters say they now support Mitt Romney
"A Frank Luntz focus group made up mostly of former Obama voters say they now support Mitt Romney."
"Forceful, compassionate, presidential," one participant said.
"Confident and realistic," said another.
"Presidential," another told Luntz.
"Enthusiastic," another reacted.
"Our next president," one man said.
"Dynamo, winner," said one more.
"He's lied about everything. He lied to get elected in 2008, that's why I voted for him.
I bought his bull. And he's lied about everything, he hasn't come through on anything.
And he's been bullsh***ing the public," one member of the focus group said."
I was so angry at Crowley when I went to bed, I could hardly go to sleep..It is just preposterous that someone like her would be chosen to moderate a debate so crucial and serious for the American people. In my mind, she is a traitor. She was WRONG when she slapped Governnor Romney’s hand, but the damage has been done. I wish there could be consequences for people who do these things in settings like this. She deliberately misled the American people because many people do not have the where-with-all to go look at that transcript.
Zer0 came off as detached, petulant.
Is it my imagination or did Zer0 appear “whiter” than usual? His appearance seemed to be different.
Was it make-up or is he ill?; Awfully skinny!
At one point she told Romney to sit down.
That's when I had to storm out of the room before I damaged the TV!
What an arrogant person.
She is supposed to be an unbiased moderator, not a Gestapo agent for the Democrats.
Just who the heck does she thing she is, talking to a man of that stature like that?
I thought the same thing. They put makeup on him to whiten him.
That question, more than any other, REALLY hacked me off because it is SO one-way to Romney. Obama could choose to answer it any way he wanted and come out a winner. I thought Romney did an excellent job fielding that most biased of all questions.
To be fair, there should have been a Part 2 to that question that would have been directed to Obama: "What is the biggest difference between you and Mussolini, Stalin, Lenin, Mao, and the Black Panthers and how do you differentiate yourself from them?
A less inflammatory but effective question would have been:
“Many observers find similarities between President Carter’s inept handling of the Iranian hostage situation and your inept handling of the Libyan ambassador’s murder by terrorists. What do you have to say about that?”
Leftists hate George Bush as much as we hate all tyrants and dictators. I think that woman bringing up Bush was just as inflammatory to leftists and statists as us bringing up the world’s worst despots.
The fault IMO lies with the GOP. Who put their slug representatives on the Commission to start with? Why do they agree to such formats and moderators?
It’s a set up from the start, each and every election.
I can see the argument for Mitt not wanting to risk his new popularity with delicate female voters, because otherwise he should have slapped Candy hard with a Gingrichian lecture and rebuke when she tried to referee on the side of Obama’s Benghazi lie.
He’s got another lefty of course moderating in his last debate, with Bob Schieffer, who will undoubtedly earn his own slap down. I wonder whether Romney will deliver it.
I think we’re seeing and the campaigns, especially Axelrod’s, are learning that with all the years of cable news talking head rudeness that the candidates are now expected to talk over the time and the rules and generally assert themselves in something of a debate free-for-all.
“The fault IMO lies with the GOP. Who put their slug representatives on the Commission to start with? Why do they agree to such formats and moderators? Its a set up from the start, each and every election.”
The GOP should insist that Bret Baier or Brit Hume act as moderators for at least 1 debate. Why is it always a home game for the RAT?
The GOP is not called “the stupid party” without reason. The GOP leadership is the perpetual Charlie Brown, trying to kick Lucy’s football.
She did not just “step in”—this was a calculated, planned Axelrod setup. The 11th hour capitulation to the LEFTIST MEDIA was a strategem—and the impact on the 10’s of millions of people who saw it will be hard to correct. Will it succeed in putting Obama back in the White House? Probably not. But why did the GOP agree to this nonsense in the first place?
