As Chicago struggles to quell gang violence that has contributed to a jump in homicides, a top elected official wants to tax the sale of every bullet and firearm an effort even she acknowledges could spark a legal challenge.
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle will submit a budget proposal Thursday that calls for a tax of a nickel for each bullet and $25 for each firearm sold in the nation's second-largest county, which encompasses Chicago.

I`m sure the thugs would not mind paying the bullet tax.
I wonder how much taxes thugs who use stolen guns and stolen bullets pay. But hey, it’s the Chicago way. The thugs get something free, and someone else had to pay for it. Just like Obama phones.
logic meet toilet....
HEL-LO, criminals don’t legally buy guns or bullets
Only the first step. These gangs thrive on drug sales; it’s only a matter of time before Preckwinkle decides she can curb drug trafficking by taxing heroin and crack.
Why not tax oxygen? The bullet couldn’t become a deadly projectile if it weren’t for the combustion.
I can see them giving up crime now. /sarcasm
Gosh, why don’t they simply make crime illegal? That would solve everything.
Proof positive, liberals believe any problem can be solved by taxing people that don’t cause the problem.
Notice how high the mental powers are of the left.
They actually believe s nickle tax will stop someone from killing you.
Since not everybody uses their guns for murder maybe Chicago should just impose a murder tax. If you kill someone you have to pay a $25 murder tax plus $5 for each time you shoot them. That way everybody pays their fair share. The high murder perpetrators don’t pay less than their secretaries who may murder fewer people.
A nickel per bullet? $2.50 a box for handgun ammo. Whats that going to do?
The only thing I can see is either ignorance or a way to start taxing ammo, today a nickel tomorrow a five dollar bill.
Yes, tax people (gang members) who don’t pay taxes. GENIUS.
“””””They actually believe s nickle tax will stop someone from killing you.”””
Yeah, I’m gonna have to rethink those hits I was gonna make and see if they are economically feasible. Liberal logic at it’s best.
The way to stop crime in Chicago is to fire the mayor, got to New York and get Rudy abd the police commisioner and set them to the task.
Allow cops to shoot any body that runs
A better tax would be on each bullet shot. A tax of $10 per shot would curtail the shooting better. A $25 tax on a kill shot would be great as well./s
The liberal answer to every problem - taxes. Idiots.
Of course raising responsible, respectful children in a home with mommy and daddy (same mommy and daddy their whole life) never occurred to them.
It would work better if the tax were applied to every round fired. That way the criminals could simply fill out a tax form after a shoot-out and pay five cents for every round fired. I think, to be fair, there should be a deduction for rounds fired at you by the police and a tax credit for misfires.
But that’s just me.
This would have no effect at all on gang shootings and gang activity. Liberals are such morons.
They need money, thats what this disingenuous BS is all about.
If they really wanted to end crime.
Outlaw public unions.
Hire 3x the police with the money saved
Institute school choice
Allow all law abiding citizens to own firearms
Institute chain gangs and make jail a very uncomfortable place to be
Start tearing down the nanny state and rebuilding families
Is there a photo of Ms. Prickwrinkle?
The thought of her thoughts made mine do it.
Now criminals will need to mug an old lady of her purse to afford bullets. Work, work, work.
“a budget proposal Thursday that calls for a tax of a nickel for each bullet and $25 for each firearm sold in the nation’s second-largest county”
30 rounds in a magazine times 5 cents = $1.50.
Income for a street level crack dealer: upwards of $1000 a day, if not more.
Somehow, I think the Vice Lords and Two-Sixers aren’t going to have to cut back on their “defense budgets” anytime soon.
She just looks like another old bitter liberal.
Welcome to the Windy City....
Make it a “refundable deposit”, then arrest the gang-bangers when they turn in the empty bullet cases after a night of shooting up the neighborhood. /s
Never a new idea from lobs, bullets are not cigarettes .
I want to hear someone come up with a sarcastic joke and put up the idea of a tax on each killing, then wait for the left to claim that tax is racist.
Nah; wouldn’t work.
Makes way too much sense for that liberal hellhole.
Just ONCE I’d like for these liberals with these brain-dead ideas to explain HOW their tax, on bullets and firearms here, would solve their social problem.
This is nothing more or less than an attack on those businesses that sell firearms and ammo in Shitcago. People will simply go elsewhere to buy, and if I were in the area and in that business I’d set up shop right over the line from Shitcago and advertise like crazy that my shop was in Free Illinois.
Gangbangers will, of course, not pay any tax and not give a damn about shooting/killing people any more than at present. Typical assinine liberal policy - tax an inanimate object for the bad behavior of certain individuals, expecting that it will change things. Morons!
They will have to make everyone promise to buy their stuff in Cook County. :)
“Allow cops to shoot any body that runs”
I actually had a conversation with a liberal when I was in college, who proposed that cops should not be allowed to shoot to kill, under any circumstances, even if the criminal is armed, the cops should just shoot the weapon out of his hand. The guy was completely serious.
I didn’t even bother to answer him, figuring that anybody that damn’d liberal stupid was far beyond any help I might be able to give.
