Gas Prices: There's Not Much That Presidents Can Do About Them [NBC Carries Obama's Commode Again]

When you pull up to that gas pump and nearly faint from how much it costs you to fill 'er up, you may be tempted blame the government for not doing enough to keep a lid on prices.

Resist the temptation. The truth is the global nature of the world's energy supply means that no president has much power over what you pay at the pump...

That was the opinion of a group of economists polled by the University of Chicago Booth School of Business earlier this year. Asked if changes in U.S. gasoline prices over the past 10 years have predominantly been due to market factors rather than U.S. federal economic or energy policies, not a single respondent disagreed.

Oh look, the "journalist" who cranked out this crap even defends Obama's ridiculous debate statement:

" U.S. demand for gasoline peaked in 2007 and has been declining steadily since then. Part of the reason, as Obama mentioned in Tuesday’s debate, is that the recession cut into demand for energy. But gasoline consumption is also falling because the cars and trucks are becoming more fuel-efficient. Obama cited his administration’s efforts to drive fuel efficiency standards higher."

Garbage, yellow journalism....refusing to hold the friggin' communist in the Oval Office accountable. His OWN WORDS about his energy policy prove that he WANTS ENERGY PRICES TO BE HIGH.

Whoever wrote this crap ought to be fired.

This is more about not having the government try to raise the price of gas than it is about the government trying to lower the price of gas.
They simply don’t understand this thing called ‘supply’

Take the 18.4% tax off the gallon for a starter. The money will go to purchase goods BECAUSE it’s like money found. Purchases produce jobs for people who will pay taxes....etc...etc. We cannot be a three item economy.

A festering sore of Marxism on Chicago's south side. Has been one for generations!

Gas Prices: There's Not Much That Presidents Can Do About Them

Oh, really? Then why all the wailing and gnashing of teeth when Bush was in office and families were "struggling to get by" when gas was $2/gallon????

Obama’s explanation of why gas prices are high now was beyond a joke, it was (from an economics standpoint) perhaps the most ignorant thing I’ve ever heard a person say—and he’s the president! I thought “My God! Is that really his depth of economic understanding?”

He’s not even at the econ-101 level, because anyone that had actually completed a course in economics-101 would know what he said was complete rubbish.

The Federal Gasoline Tax is 18.4 cents per gallon, not 18.4 percent.

If a bad economy caused the low gas prices for most of Bush's two terms, why did it spike way up in for a couple months the fall of in 2008?

The economy was far better under Bush and gas prices were low, under O’vomit the economy sucks, but gas prices have been high his entire term.

Barak Obama wanted $5.00/gal gasoline at the pump. Seems he has pulled the levers of power quite effectively. COL(Cry out loud)

I predict gas prices will begin to drop immediately after Romney is sworn in. OPEC knows how much fuel the US can produce when pro energy policies kick in.

you may be tempted blame the government for not doing enough to keep a lid on prices.

Resist the temptation.

This much of the article is actually rational and intelligent. The problem isn't that the government isn't doing enough, but rather that the government is interfering too much. Get rid of the artificial government imposed barriers to production. Get rid of the government imposed additives and special blends and ethanol requirements. Allow the market to allocate resources efficiently and allow for domestic drilling. Allow a few new refineries to be built. If the government would do less on the restriction side, we could increase supply, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and drive down prices.

It is true that government can do little to influence oil and gas prices, but the answer is government needs to do much less -- and get out of the way -- rather than more.

THE SOCIALIST LEFT infested in the MSM are going right down the crapper with THE FOREIGNERS REGIME. Gas prices are based on whats happening in the market. If you have a regime that restricts drilling to increase supply. Over regulates production. Hire people in their administration who are anti oil and over regulators based on warped ideological AGW believes you will get exactly what we have today. $4.00 gas.

what a load of baloney.

They don’t even consider the fact that the price of oil per barrel doesn’t move that much, what has moved is their dumb economics of printing and flooding the market with fake $$, which over O’s term has devalued our dollar to near half of what it use to be.. Devalued $ means that we pay more for Imports, that wouldn’t effect us so much if we drilled most of our own oil.. how is it not O’S fault ?
