Massive study finds only 3.4% of American adults identify as LGBT

A massive new survey published this morning reveals that only 3.4% of American adults publicly identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, with the highest percentage coming among the younger, less-educated non-whites.

The new Gallup Poll of more than 121,000 adults, the largest of its kind on record, wass conducted during the past four months. It finds the percentage of self-reported LGBT Americans to be much smaller than a general impression derived from their presence in popular culture and their perceived influence in liberal American politics.

The special report found 3.4% of adult Americans publicly reporting themselves as personally identifying with those categories, 92.2% saying they do not and 4.4% refusing to say or claiming not to know.

Given the stigma often attached by some to those categories, some unknown portion of the Didn't Say's and No's presumably are choosing to remain in the closet, holding down the LGBT number somewhat.

"This initial analysis," Gallup reports, "reveals new insights into the composition of the LGBT community in the U.S. In particular, the findings challenge both media and cultural stereotypes to reveal that the LGBT population is in a number of ways not that different from the broader U.S. population."

Gallup also found the social characteristics of those self-reporting themselves as LGBT is dramatically different from their portrayal in the media as largely white, well-educated and well-to-do.

The largest percentage (4.6%) came among blacks, followed by Asians (4.3%), Hispanics (4%) and non-Hispanic whites (3.2%).

Results showed that a larger percentage of women, especially younger women, reported themselves as LGBT (3.6%) compared to men (3.3%).

And Gallup reports those publicly asserting to be LGBT tend to be younger, less-educated and less wealthy than the rest of the population...

Like to see the questions and methodology. Remember reading they ask if someone has one same sex experience in their lifetime = bisexual.

Maybe a girl got drunk in college...

1-2% is usually the stat so this seems high.

For decades it was the absurd 10% figure - to give homosexuals more political power.

That sounds accurate over all, but is way low for my neck of the woods.

LUGs (Lesbian Until Graduation) might account for the difference.

It’s amazing how such a tiny minority wields so much power. They are winning every battle they fight and will likely win the war. I wish the conservative movement had half the power and influence as the “LGBT” crowd.

So we CHANGE our entire military for a lousy 3%? Causing 97% to suffer for a lousy 3%? Catering to the few at the expense of the many NEVER WORKS. EVER. NEVER. Another reason to kick 0bama OUT of office.

Exactly the opposite of the image of the Gay Elite that the media tries to sell us.

1-2% probably is gay

The rest might have given it a try or something and they’d get counted.

Most homosexuals are not born that way. They just get sucked into it.

Or, perhaps something like a question [asking] if you find any members of the same sex to be good looking.
That's right, you can't be impressed with, say, an athlete's body [assuming they're of the same sex] without being at least bisexual.

The report actually infers that. More people in the education process identified as LGBT as compared to college grads. More people in grad school also identify LGBT as opposed to college grads.

I am stretching this data quite a bit to make the generality. But, this infers to me, that the education system tolerates or promotes LGBT behavior. It also infers that people who graduate from college and get out into the real world, escape that influence and therefore their numbers are lower.

Of course reality is different from fantasy -Will & Grace has nothing to do with colon exploration and self destructive depraved sexual proclivities.

Even after decades of “coming out” and it isn’t near the ten percent we have been told.

Well - the percentage of homosexuals in the US is between 2 and 3% - but in some areas (like San Fran and DC) the percentages run between 5 to 8%.

Of course, they want you to believe they have up to 10% nationally - for, as you well point out - political power!

There are quite a few states where the 'gay' population is below 1 percent - most of them, if I remember correctly, are in the mid-west.
