I disagree with this statement. The unemployment rate is not up. The 7.8% unemployment rate is a monthly report and is accepted and repeated by Republicans and is loudly touted by Democrats and the MSM as good news. No "asterisks" is mentioned. Obama gets the credit for the reduced number regardless of how contrived it is. The real number will not be published until just before the election (if even then). The weekly reported "unexpected" rise in jobless claims does not resonate with the public and does not change the reported 7.8% rate. The BLS is not going to go back and recalculate the unemployment rate and say "excuse us" but we were just trying to get Obama elected!

There is not much correlation between the weekly new claims report and the monthly jobless rates since it is entirely possible that as new claims spikes for a week or 2 so can hiring. The info determining the monthly report is not taken from the weekly figures of new claims.

That’s true, and the other effect that this is having is what one might call “statistics fatigue.” People know that all the numbers that come out of the government about anything are totally meaningless and nobody except news commentators pays any attention to them anymore.
We’re becoming like the Russians of a few decades ago under communism, who could hardly restrain their laughter when glowing announcements about having achieved the latest car, steel or whatever production goal were triumphantly released. Everybody knew every number they read in Pravda was false, and we know the same about our US Pravda, the Obama mouthpiece MSM.

I agree. The weekly new claims report has little or nothing to do with the unemployment rate reported on a monthly basis.
