Obama Describes Deaths Of 4 Americans In Libya As 'Not Optimal'. Now He's Channelling Mike Dukakis By Tim Stanley October 19th, 2012
Obama has given Romney a gift with his "not optimal" remark Sometimes the President can be very odd indeed. In a pre-recorded interview with The Daily Show on Thursday night, host Jon Stewart asked Obama what he thought about the deaths of 4 Americans during the September 11 attack on the US embassy in Benghazi, Libya.
The President replied that it was not optimal. He was picking up on a sound bite used earlier by Stewart, but he could just as easily have stolen it from a Dalek. Its an incredibly cold, robotic and insensitive way to describe a human tragedy. This is the quote:
Here is what I will say, if four Americans get killed it is not optimal And we are going to fix it, all of it. And what happens during the course of a presidency, you know the government is a big operation at any given time, something screws up and you make sure you find out what's broken and you fix it.
Is this Obamas Dukakis moment? During the 1988 presidential election, Democratic nominee Mike Dukakis was asked if he would favour the death penalty if a man raped and murdered his wife. Dukakis reply was so lacking in emotion that it came across like he wouldnt really care one way or the other.
The Massachusetts liberal was already down in the polls, but his answer helped define him as an out of touch wonk and contributed towards the scale of his defeat. Real people dont vote for automatons.
But while Dukakis lost points on style, he at least was honest and philosophically coherent. There is much more wrong ....

No, it was kind of a bummer for those involved, I suspect.
I’ve been in a few low-leverage situations myself where you have to roll out...
They are heroes, and they spend a big part of their lives, and sometimes their whole lives ready to lay down theirs for a cause. We would hope that is an honorable one, as in this case, protecting an Ambassador and embassy personnel, but I’m afraid they were sold short in this case.
Obama used the “optimal” word answering the use of the word by Jon Stewart in his question to Obama, which was a reference to intercommunications between the departments, which appeared not to be “optimal”.
This is a bad take for Obama to use the word in relation to the four deaths, but I haven’t seen the clip. His vocabulary is sure getting him in trouble, following the “act of war” used in the Rose Garden.
I still do not understand why nobody has asked Obama why no attempt was made to rescue the people at the embassy! Where were the helicopters with special forces? Obama just left the embassy staff there for hours until they were finally murdered. Somebody please ask him about that!
Rescue in an emergency situation ?
Yes, and I’m sure Dear Leader was just that unconcerned. I do wonder what the generals around him think about all this.
Does that mean there should have been more Americans killed?
why nothing from petreas?
Not optimal? In what Sense? Oh Yeah,Not Optimal for His Campaign
No worries Mr. President, voters will fix that problem for you.
At least he didn’t refer to them as corpse-men.
It’s also “not optimal” to refer to the Benghazi Charlie Foxtrot as a “bump in the road,” Barack.
“Here is what I will say, if four Americans get killed it is not optimal ? And we are going to fix it, all of it.”
You’re going to “fix it?”. REALLY?! How the f$#@ do you “fix” death? What, the arrogant SOB is going to bring them back?
Bathhouse Barry: the American voters’ biggest clusterphuck EVAH!
‘optimal’ means: best possible compromise solution to a problem, when there are several competing considerations, not all of which can be simulataneously maximized.
Just the tendency for understatement exhibited by those of British heritage
