Man Questioned for Molotov Cocktail at Mall (Arlington, Va. Terrorist Attempt)
ARLNow.com ^ | October 19, 2012 | ARL Now

Posted on 10/19/2012 9:24:26 AM PDT by WashingtonSource

Police and federal agents are searching for a man who threw a Molotov cocktail-like incendiary device inside the Ballston Common Mall. [Now found and arrested.]

The man threw what was described as a “flaming bottle” from an upper level of the mall down to the food court. The device, said to be 40 ounce beer bottle, possibly containing gasoline or a similar substance, shattered on impact but did not explode, according to Arlington County Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck. No one was injured.

The Feds have him and not the Local police.

I'm going out on a limb to profile the guy based upon the photos. He's a goat-loving Moslem.

Are you sure that this wasn’t just another film critic?

I realize your comment is meant to be humorous. But on the chance it was not, I doubt it was a disgruntled movie critic. If true, he would have blown up one of the theatres instead of the food court — which is a large space with many people in it. He wanted to kill or injure as many people as possible.

I think it’s foolish to jump to any conclusion that eliminates terrorism. That’s the Obama Administration’s and the media’s standard operating procedure. One does not commit arson openly and publicly in the middle of the day. The fact it was done when the Mall was crowded clearly marks it as a terrorist act. What’s to dispute? Killing innocent civilians is the essence of the terrorism. The only question is who is behind it?

Most arsonists don’t want to get caught. Most don’t want to kill people. They want to watch a fire, not screaming people.

This was not arson because dropping it into a crowded food court does not fit. The only thing flammable down there would be the chairs and the people. He had three firebombs and was too stupid to build them properly. I assume after the first one didn’t have the desired effect, he abandoned the other two and ran to the closest mosque, Arlington has a few.

I did not rule out 'terrorism'.

' Killing innocent civilians is the essence of the terrorism.'

No, its not. Terrorism is simply a method. IRA used a different blend of terrorism to achieve there goals, AQ uses a different one as well.

However, some people just like to harm and hurt people. There are actual arsonist and people like that out there. Nor, would I label every dam crime terrorism.

The punk could be a 'terrorist' but he is also a failed arsonist.

There’s no evidence whatsoever he was trying to commit arson — so I think you’re taking a leap of faith that defies the facts.

I reiterate that it is also foolish to immediately discount terrorism. I think the circumstantial evidence, in fact, points to terrorism.

I can reveal - on the basis of experience - that trying to get away with something like this anywhere within a considerable radius of DARPA headquarters is a very bad idea. That’s all I’m sayin’.

'Sternbeck said the crime Traille is accused of — tossing a glass bottle, with a lit wick and containing a flammable liquid, into the mall food court — was likely not an act of terrorism.

“Right now we don’t believe it’s an act of terrorism,” he said. “It’s more like it’s an act of stupidity.”'

The guy is an idiot and probably had mental issues.

The most destructive part in the article is the reference to our laws : 'Federal charges, which may supersede the local charges, have also been filed'.

Once again the State is subject to the Federal Authority of our country. We have enough laws on the books.

Ballston Mall is right across the street from the National Science Foundation. Even money says this was just a bored egghead attempting to prove a federally-subsidized hypothesis.

The standard operating procedure is for authorities and the media to immediately deny it is terrorism. So, this claim does not surprise me. I await actual facts, not false reassurances from authorities who are merely and obviously speculating.

Yes, that’s part of the FBI instruction book. The first thing you say when this kind of thing happens, is that “It was not terrorism.”

“We don’t know anything at all yet, but one thing is for sure. It was not terrorism.”

I had a late lunch at the Front Page across the street and there were agents everywhere. The urgency had passed, so everyone was kind of laid back. But you are correct: a certain building with no identifying name or constituency sits benignly only a few blocks away.

Lighten up, Francis, I was just joking

I used to work in the area and was a regular at the Ballston Mall Chick Fil A (they used to have people outside the mall handing out coupons and would let you take as many as you wanted).

I used to lime to identify (not hard at all) and sit next to the NSFers because their lunchtime discussions were always fascinating to evesdrop on.

shattered on impact but did not explode

These devices aren't even supposed to explode. They used to work against armor by penetrating through gaps and burning there. Gasoline can be used, but there are more advanced mixtures; the Soviet design included the ignition source inside the bottle (H2SO4 + KClO3 + sugar,) this made the bottle into a self-contained, primed weapon. Modern tanks are minimally vulnerable to burning liquids; but of course any flammable materials or people will burn.

The mall where this happened is home to 1 of 4 theaters in the country where “Hating Breitbart” is opening today. Coincidence?? Maybe. The theaters are on the top floor of the mall, the Food Court is the bottom.

The mall has a metro stop, connects to a an 8 level parking garage, there are offices and the Washington Capitals practice rink on top of the parking garage. The clientele of the mall are sometimes sketchy, but it’s not a dying mall yet.

In Arlington, the Feds would look at anything like this very seriously. Throwing a 40oz bottle down the atrium into the Food Court is basically “depraved indifference”. Add the gas and lit fuse and it is premeditated murder, in VA it could be capital murder if two or more people are killed. Since it’s bleeding-heart Arlington, probably not on state charges by the local DA.

I don’t know why it didn’t light, maybe it took a lucky bounce and the neck of the bottle was out of the splash zone. Olde English 800, the “weapon of choice” — cheapest buzz in the convenience store.

Hating Breitbart? Perhaps you’re right. If that’s true, it means the incident could have been perpetrated by a Leftist terrorist and not a Muslim terrorist, although it’s hard sometimes to separate the two since they share so many goals.

Yup. Just to date myself (I’ve worked in the area on two different stints in the last 20 years) when I worked there most recently I missed the old Slades that was on the first floor. I think there’s only the one in Tysons now (although the name’s been changed).

He doesn’t look like a very stable person. Also, he looks to be under 30 years old. The full beard is consistent with being a Muslim.

Was Slades a restaurant? If so, what is the name of the former Slades at Tyson’s Corner? Was that on the first floor on Wilson Blvd side sort of in the middle where they have a different restaurant now?

I believe Ballston Mall opened in 1986 or 1987. The old Hecht’s department stores was the anchor — now Macy’s.

I think the Slades in Tysons is now "Nortons"? It's on the second floor, above the California Pizza Kitchen and across from where the old arcade used to be. Same ownership, decor and menu as Slades, just a new name.

The Slades in Ballston Mall was facing Wilson. I haven't been there in a while, but there was a quasi-Mexican place (Chevy's?) in the space. There also used to be a Slades in Springfield Mall.

Slades was the starting point for the GAR restaurant chain that now includes the multiple Sweetwater Taverns, Mike's American Grill in Springfield, Jackson's in Reston, the two Coastal Flats (Fairfax and the Tysons expansion) and a few other one-offs (Arties and Silverado, for instance - I think both are still around).
