Oh my: Paul Ryan campaigning tomorrow in - western Pennsylvania

Yesterday the bombshell Susquehanna poll, now this. Dude, is this happening?

Actually, I think this is less about putting Pennsylvania in play (for now) than it is about messing with Democrats’ heads and making a pitch to southeastern Ohio next door, but it’s a fun little gambit.

Good point about southern Ohio being just next door (with a media market overlapping with western PA.) So even if Romney doesn't win PA, campaigning in western PA can still be tactically useful. But Romney just might win PA.

“Romney just might win PA.”

I am hopeful, although this will no doubt ensure the return of Eric Holder’s Black Panther shock troops providing “security” at polling places throughout greater Philadephia.

IMHO I disagree. I think PA is in play, and I think OH ends up red. Lots of coal, and steel in these 2 states. It takes coal to make steel. Yeah there’s a lot of union, but I believe they will separate from their leadership once in the booth.
I know it’s anecdotal but I went to the Romney rally in Portsmouth OH, a town of about 20,000, and we had 6-8000 people show up. There were about 20 protestors for Obozo who showed up, and the event was on a college campus. There is no enthusiasm for the muslim down here Southern OH.

We can write off where the panthers hang out, Philadelphia. It’s the surrounding counties and western PA, i.e., Pittsburgh, that would be Romney country.

I have been predicting a landslide in Ohio for Romney. The 47%will not be getting off their tails to cast votes. They are like overfed cats relaxing in their section eight housing. BTW.. beautiful murals on the floodwalls in Portsmouth.

Ryan needs to say two things: (a) “Coal” and (b) Wisconsin could have been the home of the folks in The Deer Hunter.

The American spirit still lives in this country. We may still cling to our guns and our Bibles, but that’s because someone wants to take them, and our American way of life, away from us.

Dick Morris on Hannity, said he had seen another internal republican poll taken earlier this week, that had Romney +3 in PA. So it may really be in play this year. This will all be about turnout. Who wants to vote and make a change. This is looking like November 2010 all over again.

I can tell you what I see driving around eastern PA.....all I see is Romney signs in the yards. If I had to guess the ratio is something like 30 Romney signs for every 4 obama. Everyone I know is commenting on this.....definitely different than 4 years ago.

Obama cannot afford to lose PA, nor even appear to be at risk of losing PA on election night. If PA is declared for Romney while polls are still open on the west coast, Dems will just stay home there.

SE Ohio and Western Pennsylvania are the northern reach of Appalachia, coal country and a rugged independent Scotch-Irish streak. Unions have basically released their voters to do what they have to do--Obama's war on coal has cancelled the 'rat contract with the union voter.

Here in SE PA (excluding Philly) it's more like 2 or 3 to 1 with Romney the clear winner. However, that's only because in the last two or three days some Obama signs have been popping up. In the burbs, but particularly when you cross into Philadelphia, the sheer dearth of Obama signs is remarkable, particularly when you go into the primarily African American neighborhoods. The sign situation here marks a huge shift from the last few presidential elections.

I'm really hoping that the combination of an unenthused African American base staying home coupled with a fair amount of liberal elites in the burbs going for Romney is enough to tip PA to Romney.

I’m in Westmoreland County (east of Pittsburgh)...and I can say I have NEVER seen as many campaign signs as I have in the last week or so. There is one very popular one “SAVE COAL, FIRE OBAMA” (I personally want a couple—an extra one for my daughter’s place. Only with those are the R/R, as well as Tom Smith (who is sneaking past Bob Casey—Casey being only dimly aware he IS currently a US Senator) and for the Ra further down the ticket. I have seen 3 Obama signs (in 08 O/B signs were every where).

It is the counties surrounding Philadelphia which are starting to break in R/R’s direction. I understand those counties have a relatively high Jewish population, and Jews are starting to wake up to Obama and the Dems.

Good evening Sneaks!!! I was pleasantly surprised by the dandelion like Republican signs that sprung up in my little township. Now. I just read the article, and Ryan (and maybe even Romney!) NEED to venture away from the airport hangar speechw and BACK into the communities. Back in July, when Gov. Romney was in Irwin they overbooked the tickets—my son & his friends couldn’t get in—and this was back when Romney was waaaay behind here in PA. People with signs & US flags lined up on US 30, as his bus & security got off the TPike. I’m excited to see what type of crowd Ryan gets!

IN AND OUT OF THE JOHNSTOWN AREA (WESTERN PA)THERE ARE VERY FEW OBABMA SIGNS, BUT MANY ROMNEY SIGNS. RANDOM CONVERSATIONS WITH STRANGERS AT STORES, GAS STATIONS, ETC., SOUNDS LIKE ROMNEY HAS THE MOMENTUM. I HAVE SEEN ONLY ONE OBAMA BUMPER STICKER SO FAR THIS YEAR. LAST ELECTION, THE PLACE WAS POLLUTED WITH THEM AND SIGNS.

Seriously out here the “Coal” sign is the hot ticket—was told Greensburg should be getting them. Btw, my 18 year old (in college in OH) signed up to phone bank this weekend. He registered to vote in OH (you only need 30 day residency).

And, for college Halloween party, he is going as Paul Ryan (carrying a dumbbell& backwards ball cap). If Paul Ryan had an 18 y/o son...he would look like you know who.

“However, there is a good chance New Jersey may go to Mitt Romney.”

I’ve been getting mocked for months for saying the same thing; I think many FReepers are living in parts of the country that are better off than the northeast. Our taxes were high to begin with, we lost the decent jobs that made those taxes affordable, and things are literally falling apart. Governor Christie was elected for a reason (one year after Obama carried NJ), and voters still think he’s doing a good job (so the blame lies elsewhere). NJ libs have lost the luxury of voting the lib line; they are fighting for their financial survival, and will vote in their own interests.

Are you Bucks county? I'm Montco and it's only been the last few days that Obama signs have started popping up. Still remarkably few.

I'm watching CNN right now and it's like an alternate universe - They have 0 up by 6 points in Iowa and Wisconsin. Then they were talking about how they think Ohio will go to 0 because unemployment is down there. Is that right?

Zero is going to lose Central PA big time. The Romney campaign is nailing down the vote in the western PA while hitting SE OH. If things keep going well, look for an all out assault on SE PA. That spills into South Jersey, DE and NE MD. (Philadelphia’s TV market) NJ is in getting close to being in play. DE will go the way of NJ ... Small wonder.

No chance of that. If Obama doesn’t win PA, “objective” journalism will not call it for Romney until the polls close in the Pacific Time Zone.

If Republican wins had been reported as quickly as Democrat wins with the same margin of victory, late voters on the West Coast would have been treated to the knowledge that Gore had lost his home state of Tennessee, and Clinton’s Arkansas.

I live in CT myself. I don’t see much enthusium for obama here, but he should win CT. However, obama did not win NJ by the margin that he won most of the other Northeast states with the exception of maybe NH.

I think it would be very feasible for Romney to carry NJ, PA and OH. However, I don’t to count my chickens before they hatch.

It would be very wise of young Mr.Ryan to give the folks out there a bit more than the standard 5 minute stump speech.

Not saying turn it into Lincoln/Douglas, but flesh things out a bit, bearing in mind the voting history of a lot of those folks.

This election is a rare chance for the conservative viewpoint to make serious inroads into one of PA's erstwhile blue corners.

Maybe if we can sufficiently isolate and ostracize Philthy, they'll voluntarily cede themselves to NJ and voila > Alabama North !              LOL

It’s right, because Kasich is the governor. That’s the same catch 22 here in Florida. Employment looks better and O is claiming responsibility.

But anyway, don’t discount CNN just because you don’t like the poll results. Remember, Rassmussen has Romney up by only 1. If that’s the case, then states like WI and IA are very much problematic for Romney. Let’s face it without Gallup’s poll none of us would be so enthusiastic.
