Maria Lopez Reeves stares out the minivan window at a series of unfamiliar storefronts.
"I hope we're going the right way," she tells her husband, David.
He shrugs and replies in Spanish, "Si no es por aqui, es por alla." If it isn't this way, it's the other way. They're trying to find a Pentecostal church, where the service is scheduled to start in a matter of minutes. Maria is anxious. She grew up with people who were more laid back about punctuality. But here, other churchgoers might stare if they're late, and Maria wants to make a good first impression. She needs a new spiritual home.
Maria glances at the clock and shifts in her seat. "I wonder if this pastor is on Puerto Rican time or American time," she says.
David makes a U-turn and heads in the other direction. This sprawling stretch of highway in central Florida is at the heart of a political battleground. The population in Osceola County has ballooned in the past decade -- fueled largely by an influx of Latino residents who've helped turn a region that once leaned Republican into a wild card that both presidential candidates want to win.
She wonders whether Republican hopeful Mitt Romney would push for the financial help she needs and promote the moral values she supports.

Uh!!No!! They will encourage an economy that will allow the opportunity for you to help yourself.
Vote in 2008: Barack Obama”
No way she votes for Romney. The Rats are too willing to bankrupt everyone else so Maria can get a house, has her food stamps, welfare, Medicaid (even though the article said Medicare. She's 59.), etc.
The moral values she supports?
Like mooching off others?
How does she qualify for Medicare when she's only 59?
Mediate is automatic, no matter what you age, after you have been on disability for 2 years
You know. This is the secret of why Obama may not be able to count on the food stamp leeches for his re-election. They will NEVER be grateful to him for handing them more cash. Its never "thank you." Its always gimme gimme gimme and make the "rich" pay for it.
Should be Medicare is automatic. Fumble fingers
Osceola County, not too far from where I am, is slowly turning into a Third World poverty zone
If it isn’t the “gimme gimme” of the welfare crowd....it’s the “how come there are no unions” from the ones who gain employment.
The shock of many coming from the North to Florida....regardless of whether they are Puerto Rican or not....is that you get less in food stamps/welfare, and, there are no unions to complain to (you have to “work” at a job here).
In recent years, you hear and see of more people coming to Florida....and leaving after a year or two because you do not make as much money off the government, or working, as you do up North
This is the Democratic Media front-running with more mush about Latinos only wanting handouts. They basically want to make Latinos look like Blacks, which for the most part is not the case. This woman aside, most Latinos aren’t looking for handouts - and most do not trust government in general, given where they’ve come from.
Only way to be on medicare at 59 is a disability!!
Wow, a CNN op-ed pushing Zero’s reelection, filled with straw men, and masquerading as news. What a surprise. Thanks tobyhill.
She’s going the broke defense.....SSI and/or Medicaid...neither requires having worked and paid SS or Medicare.
Article said she was deaf.
And refusing to learn English?
