The 2012 presidential contest revolves around one central question: Will this be a national or a state-by-state election?
If it’s a national election — one dominated by an overarching theme — Mitt Romney will win.
His theme is that President Obama has failed and it’s time for a new direction.
We can see, over the past two weeks, how this theme is starting to move voters nationwide — with polls tightening even in states like Washington and California and Massachusetts.
OK: Romney won’t come even remotely close to winning any of those states — but if things continue as they’re going, he will cut Obama’s 2008 marginso f 20 to 30 points in half. In California alone, that could mean he’ll get 1 million to 2 million more votes than John McCain did. This suggests just how different this race is looking from Obama’s triumph four years ago.
Even more striking, it demonstrates that Obama has failed to harness any kind of national momentum himself.
Nobody understands how political momentum works, the way nobody understands how a curve ball works when technically a baseball’s path can’t curve. But just as a curve ball seems to curve, momentum is a very real thing as elections approach.
Momentum feeds off a national theme. People get a sense they’re participating in something larger than themselves, making a historic social-racial-generational choice (as in 2008) or a choice to alter the nation’s direction with one vote (if Romney wins on Nov. 6).
It hasn’t hit that point yet for Romney, not with 18 days, one last debate and probably some October surprises yet to come. But if his message keeps on resonating from now until Election Day, we can expect the combination of national theme and momentum to continue.

If Romney doesn’t stumble, I believe there IS a chance that the BLUEST states are in play and he could win some!
Oh, but I’m so worried that “women in binders”, Big Bird, and now “Romnesia” will overcome all of Obama’s failures and win the day for him!!!

Interesting article. My only disagreement is that I don’t think this is part of a “top-down” strategy to run the Romney campaign on a national level in the hopes of generating momentum in all states. From what I’ve been seeing and hearing in recent weeks, this is part of a “bottom-up” GOP strategy that is focused on generating support for Republican candidates in individual Congressional districts ... and the result is that this is building the party’s national momentum at the top of the ballot.
One really has to wonder at the absurdity of these gambits. Does the obama team even realize how trivial these are to everyone? Big Bird spent his capital back in the 90's. The world is still trying to figure out what the women in binders thingie means, and Romnesia is a throwaway line good for about as long as a piece of kleenex.
They are total losers on the issues, so I guess they have nothing else to use. Romney must be as squeaky clean as he appears. If there was even a whiff of scandal to be had the media would have drenched us in it by now
Just imagine, we are days away from the Rodeo, and the momentum is clearly in the favor of RR, and they are spending all of this emotional and cash on Big Bird, Binders, and whatever, this is just incredible..
Can anyone really believe that an undecided would change or get so motivated to vote for Obemer because of any of these topics? I'm sure there are some, but I don't believe they were a Romney voter anyway..
They’re struggling to hold their base. When that happens, you KNOW they’re desperate.
But if their base can be held by binders, Big Bird and Romnesia, then that says it ALL about their base.
But that’s what they think of their base - that THAT, plus free contraception, can hold them.
The ones who cheer Obama’s and Biden’s every word - no matter what - are clearly there to give the impression that the country at least Obama’s base in the country, is all for their every word.
But that isn’t true.
Even their base is get-able in some instances...women, some minorities, moderates of all stripes...if Romney for instance wins the suburbs in some of these close states, where Repubs lost last time and have for SOME time, then that will clearly show their so called base is very get-able.
Thanks billorites.
Whats really amazing is that about 47% of the population is composed of morons, leftists, feminists, 3rd world ignorant imports (not all), and die-hard democrats who vote party line even if the devil were on their ticket. That Obozo is still even competitive in this race is a travesty.
Hoping Romney can frame in this next debate that women would be better served by having a strong national defense in a hostile world and a strong economy at home. Most normal women want to know they are safe and secure as a far greater priority that petty issues like contraception.
Out of curiosity, what do you base that on?
Not sure how true that is -- but you can take it for what it's worth.
He’s already doing much better with women voters, even before the third debate. Here’s something I read...that Romney has projected an image that all but the most brainwashed or radicalized women can appreciate. And that he projected that image in the first debate, which served as his base, or first, image with these women, many of whom didn’t know Romney except by what they had heard/seen from the Dems and media.
That projected image is one of safety and security. You got a sense, watching Romney, that here is an accomplished guy, mature, stable and yes successful. Steady, dependable. They feel he will do his best to right the economy, that he has some credentials in that area, and that he WILL answer the 3 a.m. phone call.
Obama’s big government gobbledegook by now has worn thin and Obama personally does not project and image that makes them feel secure.
And neither does Biden. Especially Biden doesn’t.
Did you catch Romney’s Biden quip at the Al Smith dinner? He said, glad to see the President here, but I had hoped VP Biden would show up, as “HE”LL LAUGH AT ANYTHING”.
IOW at this dinner where we’ll try to joke our way through and hope for some laughs, Biden would be helpful because he’ll laugh, NO MATTER WHAT.
That is devastating to Biden and to the ticket. Because he laughed his way through a debate that included topics that are very serious to people (women).
That I certainly believe. There’s nobody more politically beta than a GOP consultant!
“That projected [Romney]image is one of safety and security”
Yes. That is why Romney must not sound like a war monger neo-con in the third debate. No McCain-like “bomb bomb bomb Iran”. No hint of a crusade to conquer the Middle East for Jesus.
Romney’s VMI speech was a Wilsonian disaster. He needs to focus on the defense of the United States, not spreading democracy over the globe.
I caught most of the VMI speech. I think it was mostly projecting an image of strength, of standing for values that we have always stood for, and of picking our spots in which to act in some way. Give you an example: Obama literally turned his back on the Iranian student movement against the Mullahs and it was massive and it was in the streets. Instead, he negotiated with that regime so, he didn’t want to “offend” them by supporting the freedom movement’s views.
Romney would never have done such a thing, and in that he contrasts nicely with Obama. Women don’t want to hear bombs away, but neither do they feel secure with the apology tour (another Romney contrast with Obama), overthrowing our values, overthrowing Mubarack in favor of the Muslim Brotherhood, Iranian threats to wipe Israel off the map AND attack America as they seek nuclear weapons, etc.
That’s just the way I see it. And the VMI speech was meant to tilt away from the Obama foreign policy record, and not meant to replicate Woodrow Wilson.
