BURLINGTON, VT - A new school lunch report card gives Burlington schools a D+ plus for failing to offer students enough vegetarian and vegan choices.
Burlington is the only Vermont school district included in a nationwide sampling conducted by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
In general the group says school lunches are getting healthier, in part due to new federal regulations.
But the district loses points for only offering vegetarian entrees twice a week, offering no vegan entrees at all and also for not educating kids about the health benefits of a plant-based diet.

The sleeper vote of this election is school moms sick and tired of having to supplement crappy school lunches and starving utes coming home in the afternoon to raid the fridge.
I have to laugh. Because if not I’d cry.
The same people who deny the existence of a higheer power, regardless of the name we ascribe him...who preach the gospel of evolution, go strangely silent explaining simple human traits like canine incisors and front set eyes that we ‘evolved.’
The earmarks of a carnivore.
So how is it that nature ‘designed us’ over millions of years of evolution to eat meat (and we display the classic traith thereof), but in the late 80s, ‘science’ determined that no, we really are really cows and need plants to thrive healthily. That Meat is evil and we just need the non estrogen producing soy form of protien.
Freaking morons. No wonder there are so many pussified men in the world.
Edit: ‘Traits’ and “Estrogen producing’ not ‘non estrogen producing...
It’s late ;)
“not educating kids about the health benefits of a plant-based diet”
What benefits are those? Malnutrition and death?
So now our schools are supposed to blatantly indoctrinate our kids to be vegetarian?
But we do not have an official religion in this country?
Those too. And the audible crunching of stems, twigs and dried leaves is just so nice.
Animals’ diets exist on a spectrum, with obligate carnivores like cats (who can’t really digest anything but meat properly) to obligate herbivores like cattle (ditto for vegetation).
Lot of others like swine, bears, dogs and humans are omnivores, which means they can eat both, though often leaning towards one end or the other of the scale.
Pigs and bears probably closer to herbivores, then humans, then dogs closer to carnivores.
“explaining simple human traits like canine incisors”
I asked my very good friend, who’s a strict vegan, about why we have canine teeth. He said that we’d lose them as we evolved.
It just baffles me how people can so easily disregard actual science and push the BS that meat is somehow bad for us.
I would think that all the supplementation that hardcore vegans have to voluntarily do is a but worse than a steak. And having a medical condition (Chron’s disease - ‘solids’ are a problem for me) that has pushed me out of the meat eating life, I can tell you it’s no fun trying to keep nutritional balance without it.
Tobacco is a vegetable right? Perhaps they should return brass spitoons to the classroom.
The lack of protein has apparently impacted her thinking considerably ;)
They are full of excuses aren’t they?
I’m not tremendously invested in either side of the debate.
One little known fact about meat eating is that when the Sikhs decided to fight back against Muslim persecution back in the early 1600s, their guru instructed them to abandon their vegetarianism and eat meat so as to grow strong and able to fight more effectively.

A friend of a friend is vegan, and one day, she decided to make her cats vegetarian too. She nearly killed them.
This woman is nuts. Once we all went out to eat. I ordered veal. This woman jumped all over me. Didn't I know the cruelty inflicted on calves to produce that veal scallopini on my plate? I just ignored her and savored my veal.
Needless to say, my friend is careful not to socialize with both of us at the same time.
What ever happened to the brown sack lunch with a P/B and Jelly sandwich, apple and cookies?
We have NOT come a long way!!
If a meal has no meat, it isn’t a meal, It’s a salad.
I don’t mind a salad before my meal, bit I want meat, fish, oysters, crab, some sort of animal that died to feed me in my meal.Vegetables are good on the side.

Hardly! He’s a world famous guitarist. Amazing player. And, he says his view is his own, and he would never force it upon others. He never even mentions it, except when I tease him about being a weedeater. He can’t stand tofu!
“The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) is a fanatical animal rights group that seeks to remove eggs, milk, meat, and seafood from the American diet, and to eliminate the use of animals in scientific research.
Less than 5 percent of PCRMs members are physicians.
“Despite its operational and financial ties to other animal activist groups and its close relationship with violent zealots, PCRM has successfully duped the media and much of the general public into believing that its pronouncements about the superiority of vegetarian-only diets represent the opinion of the medical community.
[PCRM president Neal] Barnard has co-signed letters, on PCRM letterhead, with the leader of Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty, an animal-rights group the Department of Justice calls a domestic terrorist threat.
PCRM also has ties to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. An agency called the Foundation to Support Animal Protection has distributed money from PETA to PCRM in the past and, until very recently, did both groups books. Barnard and PETA head Ingrid Newkirk are both on the foundations board.
If he’s good with it, more power to him! But his view as his own has nothing to do with anything other than his view. There is no scientific reason I am aware of that would cause humans to lose canines.
One could make the hypothetical argument that ‘if’ we went total veg that yes, eventually we would evolve out of the need for them, but that presupposes that tens of millions of years of vegan eating by the entire population would occur. What are the odds of that happening?
That aside, his style of veganism I am 100% fine with. It’s the lib style pushing it on others, legally and as policy that makes me crazy.

He’s an exceptional person, but with an odd view of evolution. Love him like a brother! He’s had me play on some of his cds, and gotten me quite a bit of studio work. He’s someone that I consider myself very lucky to know!
