PBS recently aired a documentary on women in 6 different countries called, “Half the Sky,” based on the book of the same name, by Nicholas Kristof and his wife, Sheryl WuDunn. Countries featured in the documentary were Sierra Leon, where rape as a weapon of choice during the civil war there has now become mainstream; Cambodia, where sex-trafficking brothels are filled with younger and younger girls who are locked up and even caged, made to take “clients” non-stop; Viet Nam where girls, especially from the countryside, are discriminated out of educations and left with little hope for much of a future; Somaliland where genital mutilation still goes on, causing chronic pain and complications, and where a huge percentage of women die in child birth because of these complications and the lack of medical care; India, where the caste system and dire poverty still creates a conducive environment for parents to sell their young girls into brothels, traumatizing them for life and where generational prostitution is an entrenched way of life for many women; Kenya where violence against women is so prevalent that women have begun initiatives of education and microfinance to begin to bring change to their situations. And then there’s China, which wasn’t mentioned, with its one-child policy that has resulted in forced abortions, sterilizations, infanticide (of girls) and a huge gender imbalance which creates fertile ground for human trafficking. ...snip...

But the underlying falsehood is that women can’t be equal to men unless they are able to kill their offspring and sterilize themselves.

This country of course is the United States of America; and many countries in the West now promote this propaganda. The hidden lie is that women cannot have control of their destiny unless they can get rid of actually what makes them women.

If a man wishes to find a wife in China...he has a VERY limited chance of so doing. For those who focus merely on sex, rather than on lifelong love, they are also looking for females...and willing to pay for access to them.

It is a HUGE problem in China.

Kidnapped women for brides. North Korean refugee women living confined to the house and subject to deportation by the Chinese authorities and torture and death in North Korea if they displease their Chinese husbands.

Little boys kidnapped and sold to be sons. Dead women’s bodies sold or stolen to be grave brides for young men who died without marrying - some may even have been murdered for this purpose.

Unfortunately the idea that women are “feminists” if they want to work outside the home or have to, or think women are equal to men, still prevails...

Much of the so called “war on women” is not driven by the left, but by the right...

The ultimate “war on women” has nothing to do with who pays for contraception...

Its whether or not men (and alas some women) are going to continue to put limits on the lives and livelihoods of women...

and condemn those who they interpret as stepping outside the box in which they are suppose to remain entrenched...

Women are entitled to the freedoms and rights of the Constitution also...

However in the minds of some, only conditionally..

I am not aware of any criticism of China for permitting slavery as "human trafficking" would imply, or are you referring to prostitution?

For most of human history wars were about access to resources and it is a fact that one of those resources were fertile females. Concubinage has a long history in China. Given the gender imbalances as a result of the one child policy combined with sex-selective abortions, there are now vast pools of "unpairable" young men in China. In the wealthier cities these imbalances will be addressed by "importing" brides from poorer, more rural areas, meaning that the sex imbalance ratios in the provinces will be that much higher. This is a sure-fire recipe for conflict and social unrest, and a lucrative market for those who can "procure" brides for the desperate.

LOL! If he has any problem at all it's due to misguided social traditions or economic expectations...on the part of the potential wives. There are single women everywhere you look in China - countless millions of them and they are all desperate to be married and frustrated by the quality and relative disinterest of the men they have to choose from.

The gender imbalance story is greatly overblown, based on my observations.
