White House prepared to meet one-on-one with Iran (or not?)

The White House says it is prepared to talk one-on-one with Iran to find a diplomatic settlement to the impasse over Tehran's reported pursuit of nuclear weapons, but there's no agreement now to meet.

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said Saturday that President Barack Obama has made clear that he will prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and will do whatever's necessary to prevent that from happening. Vietor said Iran must come in line with its obligations, or else faced increased pressure.

"The onus is on the Iranians to do so, otherwise they will continue to face crippling sanctions and increased pressure," Vietor's statement said.

Iran has been a recurring issue in the presidential election. The New York Times reported Saturday that the U.S. and Iran have agreed in principle for the first time to negotiations. The paper said Iran has insisted the talks wait until after the Nov. 6 election.

Virtually at the same time, Reuters comes out with this story:

White House denies plans for one-on-one talks with Iran

The White House on Saturday denied a New York Times report that said the United States and Iran had agreed for the first time to one-on-one negotiations on Iran's nuclear program, saying it remained committed to working with major powers to resolve the standoff.

The Times, quoting unnamed Obama administration officials, said earlier on Saturday the two sides had agreed to bilateral talks after secret exchanges between U.S. and Iranian officials. Iran had insisted the talks not begin until after the November 6 U.S. election because they want to know which U.S. president they would be negotiating with, the newspaper said.

The White House moved quickly to deny the report, which came two days before President Barack Obama is due to face his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, in a debate focused on foreign policy.

Sounds like somebody made an unauthorized release prior to official October Surprise Day.

Obama won't meet with Net...But will meet with the Muslim crud????

There is nothing to negotiate with Iran...

Saddam had trade restrictions, too. He built 50 palaces during that period.

I never heard that point made before.

I hope Mitt uses that in Monday's debate.

Quick, and easily understood.

That last tweet sounds about right.

And yes, the week of October 29th is optimal for the leak.

A deal with Iran will be about as useful as an arms treaty with the old Soviet empire. Except that our ally, Israel, will be the first to lose in this.

Expect Obama to get Romney to talk about military options still being on the table with Iran in next week’s debate.

Expect Obama to have a “deal” before the election to show he has achieved peace, while Romney wanted war.

Expect there to be no way to verify Iran’s compliance (no surprise).

When the world’s crazy man (Ajmadinejad) wants Obama to win, you have to ask yourself what he has up his sleeve for the next four years if Obama is re-elected. If Obama is re-elected, I expect Iran to drop a nuc on them by 2016. And Obama will call it a “regional dispute among equally valid viewpoints”.

There are some who say what happened to Ambassador Stevens was an October Suprise that was botched by the unexpected arrival of the martyed Seals. It may have accounted for the Obama administration releasing the 47% comments earlier than they should have. I think the administration has run out of October suprises and any they try to pull will probably backfire anyway.

Obama is unfit to negotiate with an enemy of the United States and or Israel.

Get the election over with and let Iran negotiate with a competent individual.

Iran so has Obama’s number!

The way you meet Iran one on one is this:

One bomb or missile to one target in Iran.

Nothing more...and unlike th excurrent cowardice approach, nothing less.
