One of Utah's largest newspapers, located in the heart of Mormon country, has endorsed President Obama over Republican challenger Mitt Romney.
The Salt Lake Tribune endorsed Mr. Obama on Friday in an editorial that praised the president for engineering passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to stimulate the economy and accused Mr. Romney of flip-flopping and being "willing to say anything to get elected."
The paper acknowledged that their choice may be surprising to some, considering Mr. Romney's Mormon faith and his leadership and financial turnaround of the 2002 Winter Olympics held in Salt Lake City.
The Tribune also endorsed Mr. Obama in 2008 and endorsed George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004.
The article made brief mention of Mr. Obama's handling of the economy arguing that it minimized long-term damage from the 2008 financial meltdown but most of its words were spent accusing Mr. Romney of betraying his record as a bipartisan governor and successful businessman in an effort to cater to right-wing Republicans and wealthy donors.
While Utah is a majority-Republican state, its capital city of Salt Lake is considered largely left-leaning.

In this day and age what does the endorsement of any newspaper matter, I mean really?
Is this for real? If so, I am completely surprised. That paper better hope he does not get elected. They will be the last in line for press credentials.
Apoststasy- coming from the land of Apostasy.
One’s head swirls trying to make sense..
Oh wait, it coming clearer now..
The management/editors of the SLT are demon-possessed.
That’s it. We’re OK now.
This was an intentional strike that Romney will have to answer and trounce since it so close to his heart. if examined I’m willing to bet it was placed by the Obama campaign
The Democrat Controlled Congress that came into power in 2007 had nothing to do with the financial meltdown now did it?? Obama LYING about cutting the deficit in half is not "flip-flopping" is it? Obama is a Democrat so lying to the American people is a resume enhancer and is expected!
Utah and Chicago cancel out each other.
Which State is more important?
Numerous cancellation of subscriptions,
Its a good thing that newspapers are a not for profit business...er...nevermind.
1) It’s a liberal paper.
2) They endorsed Obama in 2008.
This newspaper apparently has a very anti-Mormon history, so this isn’t a surprise. Utah is Romney’s anyway
I went to East High School in Salt Lake. Roseanne Barr and Martha Raddatz were classmates. So Salt Lake has plenty of liberals.
Sorry to hear that. I would be disappointed if I were Romney. Lots of Mormons in Las Vegas too. No matter how much the president likes to hang out there, the Las Vegas Review Journal endorsed Romney. Maybe there are smart editors in Mormon towns and dumb ones in others.
This paper will not have a long business life —This will not go over well in Mormon Country! The Danites still live even if underground. Who will buy advertising from this rag?
This comes as no surprise to any of us living in Utah.
The SL Trib is as left as left can be. They’re the paper that helped give Salt Lake City Rocky Anderson as mayor.
You shouldn’t be surprised. Commies love commies—even more so when they live in very conservative areas.
The SL Trib is as left as left can be.
Article says they endorsed Bush in 2000 and 2004. Did they get bought or something?
The paper will be aroung a long, long time. They do a good business serving the pinkos in Salt Lake and dishing out their Mormon-bashing hatred. Utah is not 100% Mormon nor 100% conservative throughout.
do it people...
That would be surprising to me if they did. They’ve long been anti-LDS, and fairly left-leaning.
Thee was an ownership change recently. Some hedge fund owns it now. But the editorial board has long been lefty.
Ouch!
That's telling it like it is.
I wonder how many people under the age of thirty-five even read a newspaper or know what one is. Think about what newspapers once were and what they are today.I think in twenty years or so they won’t even exist anymore.
They also endorsed Obama in 2008. I can’t find it, but I’m guessing they endorsed Clinton back in 1996 as well.
This whole thing smells like an Obama-campaign orchestration. “Look everybody! A paper from te heart of Mormon country endorsed Obama over Romney! Wow! Romney’s campaign must be falling apart!” (No mention of the fact that the rag has leaned left in recent years and endorsed Obama four years ago.)
Thank you very much!
As SLC Tribune will find out, it can really matter to the newspaper’s revenue. They have probably enhanced their demise compared to other newspapers.
Is this newspaper where some of the $15 MILLION is going that 0bama ‘borrowed’ from Bank of America?
He is also the founder, vice chairman and chief executive officer of MediaNews Group, the fourth-largest newspaper company in the United States in terms of circulation, with 53 daily papers totaling 2.7 million subscriptions daily and 3 million on Sunday.
Additionally, he has been publisher of a number of MediaNews' dailies, including the Denver Post, the Salt Lake Tribune and the Detroit News.
Like saying Benghazi was a 'protest over a movie' rather than a terrorist attack?
They still have newspapers? I would love to see one of those, remember them from my youth. They told you about the news that happened yesterday, about as good as it got before the internet.
(I am sort of kidding here)
It is a.) the seat of government and b.) the home of the state university.
Thus, it is Madison, it is Austin, it is Columbus.
I.e., liberal...to the gills.
It’s all a matter of spelling in Utah. The Mormons will vote for Romney the morons will vote for 0bama.
I have read that Salt Lake City proper, as opposed to the metro area, is now majority non-Mormon. The Mayor is a far left Democrat and there is a culture among some subgroups of thumbing one’s nose at the LDS church.
Alden Global Capital owns this rag, looks like they have been buying newspapers from all over for awhile.
Everyone who allows the fools down at the local commie rag choose who you vote for raise your paw.
Speaking of Utah... how is the wonderful Mayor Mia Love doing in her Congressional race vs. Jim Matheson?
There are enough lefties and Mormon-haters that it does a brisk business. That, plus its distribution and classifieds are joined together with that of the Church-owned paper, the Deseret News. That keeps their costs down.
Last I heard, Love had an edge over Matheson, which is unheard of in this state. The Matheson name is well-known and respected. Matheson is running LOTS of negative ads against Love, so we’ll see.
She’s not in my district. I’m in Jason Chaffetz’ district.
That's a good way of looking at it. That's exactly what it is: A liberal enclave surounded by a vast ocean of conservatives.
Mia is doing well according to the polls. She has $$ from outside of Utah.
Mormons love her. I am not a Mormon. But I think she would be a real thorn for liberals. My mother in law is a devout LDS and she really likes Mia.
A lot of liberals around Salt Lake that is how that paper survives.
There are more Mormons in California than in Utah.
I have Mormon neighbors and they are voting for Obama.
I have Mormon neighbors and they are voting for Obama.
Romney must have pissed off someone at that paper.. maybe a business deal of some sort? At any rate, I doubt that that newspaper’s endorsement is going to flip Utah to Obama, so one has to ask what’s the point?
Carl Rove went to Olympus High in Salt Lake County. Class of 69 I think.
Must be from the effects from all that Nuclear testing there in the 40’s 50’s.
Nuclear Tests during the 40’s 50’s makes people go all Liberal....
It’s from all those Nuclear tests out there in Utah.
It's the anti-Mormon newspaper and a lot of Mormons buy and read it along with the pro-Mormon newspaper.
I have a big white button that says:
I’ll take the MORMON
Over the MORON
The ‘R’ in MORMON is the ROMNEY red, white and blue ‘R,’ AND THE ‘O’ IN MORON is BHO’s stupid logo.
