The October Surprise (Talks with Iran)
PJ Media ^ | 20 October 2012 | Michael Ledeen

Posted on 10/21/2012 3:37:10 AM PDT by Erik Latranyi

The New York Times reports (and the White House denies) that “The United States and Iran have agreed for the first time to one-on-one negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, according to Obama administration officials, setting the stage for what could be a last-ditch diplomatic effort to avert a military strike on Iran.”

Two of the three assertions in that lead paragraph are demonstrably false. One-on-one negotiations have been going on for years (most recently, according to my friend “Reza Kahlili,” in Doha, where, he was told, Valerie Jarrett and other American officials recently traveled for the latest talks). The only news here is that the talks would no longer be secret. And the notion that only diplomacy can avert “a military strike on Iran” is fanciful. There are at least two other ways: sanctions may compel the regime to stop its nuclear weapons program, or the Iranian people may find a way to overthrow the regime, thereby (perhaps, at least) rendering military action unnecessary.

I rather suspect that you don’t have to do anything to avoid an American military strike on Iran. I can’t imagine an Obama administration authorizing a military attack. An administration that can barely bring itself to fly air cover in Libya, and can’t bring itself to take any serious action in Syria, strikes me as very unlikely to unleash our armed forces against the mullahs.

As for the claim that Iran has agreed to talks, even that seems problematic, as the Times admits further down in its story: “American officials said they were uncertain whether Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had signed off on the effort.” If there is no approval from the supreme leader, there is no agreement at all.

If Valerie Jarrett is the United States’ best option for talks with our enemies, then we are indeed doomed.

And Jews should prepare to BOHICA.

It would be interesting to know who Valerie Jarrett’s parents’ friends were while she spent her formative years in Iran. Of course, I’m sure that the mainstream media has thoroughly checked this out.

It doesn’t have to be true, just the rumor is sufficient. The Israeli Ambassador to the US has already said the report was news to him.

Someone like Plouffe must have leaked this story to the NYT to help Obama before the debate Monday night. What the WH official must have overlooked is that we already have a multilateral forum for these negotiations, the P5+1. The US going it alone would piss off our allies who are participating with us in the sanctions. And if Israel was unaware of such talks, they have every right to be pissed.

Now it appears the Administration is walking this back. Either the NYT made this story up or it is being thrown under the bus. Either way, it is not good for Obama.

It was during the 1950’s - not sure how much it matters now

Very interesting. Thanks. During the Fifties, the Soviet Union was very active in trying to place Iran within its sphere of influence. If I am not mistaken, Jarrett’s parents were very much in the Red camp — which helps explain her disdain for the US.

Their list of friends in Chicago, which is where they returned to in 1962/’63, would be more interesting.

Yes it would. One of my dearest friends, the venerated journalist Sol Sanders, frequently refers to Valerie Jarrett as a “Red Diaper Baby” — ie, raised by communists. And Sol is a compendium of insider Cold War info.

The REAL October Surprise should be the release of the real-time videos from the Benghazi Consulate -

We paid for those cameras, we paid for the security, we paid for the salaries of the incompetent State Dept. and Defense doofuses that are blocking access to our REAL knowledge right now.

I as an American citizen want to know what happened.

I want to know what exactly they DID to the Ambassador.

I want answers NOW, not more lies from an unaccountable administration.

THAT should be the real October Surprise. The TRUTH.

According to Biden, we have family members that fought in the wars in Iraq and Iran.

The funniest thing about that clip is Harry Reid, sitting right behind Biden enthusiastically raised his hand twice!!

Now for the saddest part. The Obama voters probably didn’t even know, or notice, the idiocy of Biden.

I can see making mistakes like this once in a blue moon, while speaking a lot.

But for Biden, this is an “all the time” THING.
