Stanley Frank "Stan" Musial  (born November 21, 1920) is a retired professional baseball player who played 22 seasons in Major League Baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals (1941–1963). Nicknamed "Stan the Man", Musial was a record 24-time All-Star selection (tied with Willie Mays), and is widely considered to be one of the greatest hitters in baseball history. He compiled 3,630 hits (ranking fourth all-time and most in a career spent with only one team). With 1,815 hits at home and 1,815 on the road, he is also considered to be the most consistent hitter of his era. He also compiled 475 home runs during his career, was named the National League's Most Valuable Player three times, and won three World Series championship titles. Musial was a first-ballot inductee to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969 and is currently the longest tenured living Hall of Famer.

Musial was born in Donora, Pennsylvania, where he frequently played baseball in both informal and organized settings, eventually playing on the baseball team at Donora High School. Signed to a professional contract by the St. Louis Cardinals as a pitcher in 1938, Musial was converted into an outfielder prior to his major league debut in 1941. Noted for his unique batting stance, he quickly established himself as a consistent and productive hitter. In his first full season, 1942, the Cardinals won the World Series. The following year, he led the National League in six different offensive categories and earned his first MVP award. He was also named an All-Star for the first time; he would be selected to every All-Star Game in every subsequent season he played.

During the winter months of 1943-1944, Musial, along with Danny Litwhiler, Hank Borowy, Dixie Walker and Frankie Frisch, was part of a USO sponsored group that traveled to Alaska and the Aleutian Islands entertaining troops.

When it became obvious that Musial would be inducted, Pete Reiser tried to convince him to sign up with the Army. That way, Reiser could get Musial to Fort Riley where he could play with the service team. "I told Pete, 'Naw, I'm going into the Navy'," he explained to author Frederick Turner. "I just liked the Navy for some reason - the water and all. You know where a lot of those guys wound up who were at Fort Riley? At the Battle of the Bulge."

Musial won his second World Series ring in 1944, then missed the entire 1945 season while serving with the United States Navy.

In June 1945, he was assigned to Special Services and sent to Hawaii. Attached to a ship launch unit at Pearl Harbor, he ran a launch out to battle-damaged ships that came in, ferrying personnel back to port. Three or four afternoons a week he played baseball for the Ship Repair Unit in the 14th Naval District League. "Ten thousand every game," he recalled. "You know, there were so many men around Hawaii, goddamn thousands and thousands of guys, so this was good diversion for them." In August 1945, he even resurrected his pitching career, blanking an Army all-star team with a four-hitter in a game at Maui.

In the fall of 1945, Musial's father fell seriously ill at home in Donora. Stan was granted emergency leave orders to visit home. After his father recovered he was assigned duty in Philadelphia and back at Bainbridge .

Musial was discharged from the Navy on March 15, 1946, and promptly returned to the Cardinals.

Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families.  This is a politics-free zone!  Thanks for helping us in our mission!

~ Tonight... Mostly clear. Low 51F. Winds light and variable.

Kind of chilly this morning.

Had a pretty fall weekend at the homestead.
Sunday morning we (me, hubby, son, and granddaughter)
went to my parents for breakfast.
During the cooler months, mother fixes her famous
biscuits and gravy (two kinds - bacon and corned beef).
Got home in time for the game to start.
Don't even want to talk about the Skins game
other than it was a nail-biter.

Off for my morning walk.
But please stay right where you are.
Chat up the military or a family member.
No need to fret...you know I'll be back!

The FR Canteen is

Come in and sit for a while.
There's always plenty of coffee, tea,
pancakes, conversation, silliness,
and plain old BS

A Wonderful Day

Drop Sis off at the airport, so Linda got a ride in the car.
Then I rode my motorcycle to the beach, and doubled back hitting all the yard sales.

I Counted 4 Obama Signs, 95 Romney Signs, and five empty chairs, one of which was decorated with golf clubs.

All this in BROWARD COUNTY, the Bluest County in my mostly red state!

HUZZAH!!!!!!!!!!

A special guest appearance, bwaa haa haa

As a kid on his tenth birthday I got to see Stan's last game, Musial WAS St Louis at that time and still is a big part of St Louis even today.

Here is an article from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Nov. 21, 2010 90 Things to love about The Man

(STAN MUSIAL)

Teaser Bit

88 • The Man was so popular and beloved that even a Republican crowd loved him as he campaigned for his friend JFK in 1960. The famous author James Michener once wrote of being with Musial when Stan made a campaign stop for Kennedy in Nebraska. "In the shadows we saw several hundred silent ranchers awaiting us," Michener wrote. The crowd declined to applaud the pro-Kennedy celebrities that came to ask for votes. But the silence was broken when Musial's name was announced to the audience. According to Michener: "A low rumble arose from the crowd, and men pressed forward, dragging their boys and girls with them" to get close to "an authentic American folk hero."

Just got this in email...I don’t see The Miami Herald on the “no” list.

Published: October 22, 2012 By CARL HIAASEN — The Miami Herald

If a fourth-grade teacher was moderating the final presidential debate:

First of all, everybody say good evening to Gov. Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama. We’re very glad they came to South Florida for their last debate before the big election.

My name is Mrs. Krupkin, and I’ll be your moderator. As all my students at Red Tide Elementary can tell you, I run a pretty tight ship. Therefore, the rules for this debate will be a bit stricter than for the others. Smirking or eye-rolling by either candidate won’t be permitted while the other is speaking. If I catch you doing it, I’ll stop the debate immediately and embarrass you in front of the whole country. Is that clear? Excellent.

Second: The only person in this auditorium allowed to interrupt the candidates is me. If either Gov. Romney or President Obama cuts in while the other one is talking, the interrupter will lose his next turn and go into time-out for four minutes. If you think I’m kidding, just try me. Annie Krupkin is not Jim Lehrer.

In my right hand is a list of questions from students in my class - good questions, too - and we’re going to get them answered one way or another tonight. If a tough issue comes up, and either Gov. Romney or President Obama tries to change the subject, I will clap sharply and instruct him to start over.

Although past moderators didn’t seem to mind, changing the subject isn’t allowed here. Neither is stalling, or repeating one’s self. When a detailed question is put forward, please don’t go off on a story about some hard-working American you supposedly met who can’t pay off a college loan, or get medical insurance, or find a job, and then tell us how things are going to be better if people vote for you instead of your opponent.

With all due respect to Gov. Romney and President Obama, everybody watching on TV knows why you guys like these heart-touching anecdotes. They chew up a lot of time, and save you from actually addressing the question. But not tonight.

One word about that struggling single mother you met in Cleveland or the unemployed vet you saw at a donut shop in Biloxi, and I’m turning off your microphone. I even have a special switch - see?

The focus of this last debate is foreign policy. Among the subjects we’ll be discussing are the rebellion in Syria, the Iranian nuclear program, trade policy with China and the American withdrawal from Afghanistan. These are complex situations, and voters deserve frank and thoughtful explanations of each candidate’s position. A responsive answer does not include looking into the camera and saying, “That’s a very good question. I’m so glad you asked.” Everybody in the audience already knows it’s a good question, and they also know you’re not really glad it got asked.

Under my rules, each candidate won’t be allowed to say anything except his answer. Every time he wanders off point, I will clap sharply and we’ll start over again. This might take a while, but that’s all right. Unlike the moderators of the previous debates, I’m not setting an arbitrary time limit that lets the candidates off the hook. In fact, I’m not even wearing my Seiko.

So, if I were to ask Gov. Romney if he favors sending American jets to bomb Tehran, I would hope for a straight answer presented in a simple declarative sentence. And we’ll all sit here until we get one. Likewise, if President Obama can’t find exactly the right words to elucidate how his administration is dealing with the Assad regime in Syria, the question will be carefully repeated until his thoughts come together. That’s how we do things in the classroom - and it’s amazing how a few awkward silences can motivate a person to get to the point..

I understand that this new debate format will be an adjustment for the two candidates, accustomed as they are to avoiding candor and specificity. We will be patient, though firm.

The audience here has been reminded to remain quiet and respectful while it waits for questions to be fully answered. Texting will be allowed, and I’ve brought along some papers to grade. Now, gentlemen, let’s get started.
