New York is the tenth most affordable major city for middle-income homes -- thanks to high median incomes and the city's expansive transportation system, according to a report by the Center for Housing Policy and Center for Neighborhood Technology. New York wasn't the only surprise on the list. The most affordable city, according to the study, was Washington, DC, which is another notoriously expensive place to live.

You never need to own a car in a big city. The excellent public transit system makes it unnecessary to drive anywhere. So no need to factor in auto insurance or maintenance costs. That makes every thing else more affordable. In the suburbs and rural American private transportation is simply a must of course.
They have to be on something. Their list of the 10 cheapest is utterly delusional.
Anacostia and SE DC is real “affordable”, just not real livable unless you like McDonalds with armed guards
There are many parts of NY City where having a car is almost a necessity. It aint easy getting around after 8 if you have to depend on buses, or transferring buses, to get home.
I have to agree that the Daily Mail sent some clueless git, who probably lives in Manhattan, to compile this list. NY is expensive and the quality of the grocery stores and schools outside of the fancy areas can get dodgy.
Having said that, there are many places in Queens that are quite nice and not bad to live in, but on the average, one is best go somewhere else.

Also, John Rocker had it correct. When you ride public transit you get stuck sitting next to all sorts of people you'd never choose to associate with.
If you don’t mind trading quality of life, I’m sure there’s plenty of neighborhoods in DC, Cinci, Detroit, etc. that are more than affordable.

There’s a lot of truth in your statement. The only such transit system I used was NYC’s and it is a fact you don’t get to choose who else is in the Subway car with you. Sometimes it’s not very fun at all! There is a reason that the Transit Cops ride the Subways.
So although there is a drop in costs due to not needing to own a car in NYC. It also makes you totally dependent on the transit system. And of course no car means no way out of the city except on foot if the transit system shuts down.
Could be, but you need to have bars on your windows, the police have no obligation to respond even if you call them multiple times (Warren v. District of Columbia) and it's illegal to defend yourself.
Like New York, it's possible to live quite well in DC. It just takes a lot more money than most of us in the 99% have.
Cincinnati has public transportation and this is one reason why I avoid it.

DOWNTOWN — A woman was brutally stabbed several times and a second was punched in what Cincinnati police say were random attacks at Government Square downtown during lunchtime Tuesday.
The stabbing victim suffered a punctured lung about 1:30 p.m. at Metro’s downtown transit hub at Fifth and Walnut streets, just one block east of Fountain Square.
Raven, who has a long, violent criminal record, told authorities he meant to kill the stabbing victim, identified in court records as Tiara Metcalf.
“...the defendant states while attempting to murder her, the victim would not hold still, and his intention was to murder her,” police wrote in a sworn statement.
I went to a wedding on Staten Island recently and if that is what they consider middle class, which I am sure it is as the groom is a cop, no thank you. That place was a zoo and looked every bit as bad, if not worse, than our poorest neighborhoods.

And you don't need a kitchen, either, unless you like hauling a family's worth of groceries on the subway.
And think of all that money you save not doing anything outside the city.

However, this statement presupposes that you never need to go anywhere that isn't on the transit route. That you never need to get anything that you can't carry on the bus/railcar. That you never need to go at a time that the transit system isn't running. That you never need to get anywhere in a hurry. That you enjoy associating with the agressive panhandlers. That you never need to buy more than two bags of groceries at one time. etc. I rate your statement as 4 crackpipes out of five

The DC system is much nicer. You certainly get the unsavories, but it is immaculate and well secured. The NYC system is awful. I was there a few years ago and it is so filthy, your eyes literally start to burn as you go down the escalator. NYC would be super expensive for me to live in as I would have to cab it most of the time.
