New details are emerging surrounding the critical injury of a Winnsboro, LA woman set on fire in a city park on Sunday night.
Sharmeka Moffit, 20, is in critical condition at LSU Medical Center in Shreveport.
At a news conference held just before Noon Monday, authorities confirmed Moffitt called 911 around 8 p.m. Sunday from Civitan Park, telling them she had been attacked and burned by three men in white hoodies. Authorities also confirm that there were racial slurs spray-painted on her car, although they did not specify what racial slurs were used.
In addition to Winnsboro Police and the Franklin Parish Sheriff's Department, the Louisiana State Police, the FBI and the State Fire Marshal's Office are investigating. Winnsboro police say they will be tightening security at the park as a result of the incident.
According to KSLA, the story went viral Sunday evening on Twitter and Facebook. Many of the posts speculated the attack was a hate crime. However, the sheriff's office confirmed with KSLA News 12 that Moffitt was not wearing a President Obama t-shirt, despite claims on social media that the t-shirt is what provoked the attack.

Police began to suspect after learning that he had told inmates at the Anoka County jail last week that he was going to burn a cross in his yard and blame it on his neighbor. An inmate told police that June had “talked about getting sympathy and money from the public with a cross burning since he was a black man.”

I agree with you... I definitely don’t think it’s a hoax, but neither do I believe this was likely anything political.
Knowing which car was hers, and setting her on fire is a pretty clear indication of the victim KNOWING her attackers, and them knowing exactly who they were looking for. Why was she at the park (presumably alone) in the first place? How did she not know the race of her attackers? Were they wearing gloves? Did they have on masks? That extremely vague description of her attackers would put me on alert that AGAIN she most likely knew who these people were, and why they were coming after her. Sounds like she is afraid (rightfully, obviously) that these people will do more to her if she identifies them to police. Sounds typically gang-related or otherwise in that realm.
Also, the presence of racial slurs does not automatically mean it the perpetrator was of a different race than the victim. I’m sure we’re all familiar with how the n-word (for instance) is now used by so many in the younger generations to refer to each other regardless of race. (I’ve seen this among my nephews friends - he has a really diverse set of friends; white, black, Latino, etc... and they ALL refer to each other as the n-word only substituting the “er” at the end with an “a”).
I hope they catch whomever perpetrated this crime against this woman. NO-ONE deserves to be attacked in that manner.
As for the people politicizing this event with obvious lies about the “O” shirt - they are in a league of disgusting people all their own.
I think it’s more likely that she knew those attacking her and that it was planned and NOT a “random attack”. I would hazard a guess that she knows EXACTLY who did this to her and why, but she is afraid to name names - obviously because if they were ready to burn her alive before what would they do if she “ratted” them out??? I have a hard time believing someone would set themselves on fire for a hoax... It’s a little too dangerous unless the point was to actually commit suicide.
The vague description of her attackers - to the point where she doesn’t have a clue what “race” they were sounds an awful lot like the descriptions given by victims of gang violence who are terrified, and know the police won’t be able to protect them.

Honestly I was a bit offended when people’s first response was to call this a hoax. 60% of her body! But, yes, this pathetic person tried to generate racial hatred in this sick way.
