Guess who was telling the truth?
Heres the transcript:
ROMNEY: I just want to take one of those points, again, attacking me as not talking about an agenda for for getting more trade and opening up more jobs in this country. But the president mentioned the auto industry and that somehow I would be in favor of jobs being elsewhere. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Im a son of Detroit. I was born in Detroit. My dad was head of a car company. I like American cars. And I would do nothing to hurt the U.S. auto industry. My plan to get the industry on its feet when it was in real trouble was not to start writing checks. It was President Bush that wrote the first checks. I disagree with that. I said they need these companies need to go through a managed bankruptcy. And in that process, they can get government help and government guarantees, but they need to go through bankruptcy to get rid of excess cost and the debt burden that theyd theyd built up.
OBAMA: Governor Romney, thats not what you said
OBAMA: Governor Romney, you did not
ROMNEY: You can take a look at the op-ed
OBAMA: You did not say that you would provide government help.
ROMNEY: I said that we would provide guarantees, and and that was what was able to allow these companies to go through bankruptcy, to come out of bankruptcy. Under no circumstances would I do anything other than to help this industry get on its feet. And the idea that has been suggested that I would liquidate the industry, of course not. Of course not.
OBAMA: Lets check the record.
ROMNEY: Thats the height of silliness
OBAMA: Let let lets
ROMNEY: I have never said I would liquidate
OBAMA: at the record.
ROMNEY: I would liquidate the industry.
OBAMA: Governor, the people in Detroit dont forget.
Obama 1) implied Romney said he would liquidate the industry and 2) claimed that Romney did not say we should provide government help. He later doubled down on point #2:
OBAMA: The look, I think anybody out there can check the record. Governor Romney, you keep on trying to, you know airbrush history here. You were very clear that you would not provide, government assistance to the U.S. auto companies, even if they went through bankruptcy. You said that they could get it in the private marketplace. That wasnt true. They would have gone through a
ROMNEY: Youre wrong
OBAMA: they would have gone through a
ROMNEY: youre wrong.
OBAMA: No, I am not wrong. I am not wrong.
ROMNEY: People can look it up, youre right.
OBAMA: People will look it up.
Again, Obama is saying Romney was clear that he would not provide government help.
So, I did look it up. And here, in relevant part, is what Romney said. Focus on Obamas claims. Does Romney push for liquidating the auto industry? Does Romney rule out any government help for the auto industry? Lets look:
It is not wrong to ask for government help, but the automakers should come up with a win-win proposition. I believe the federal government should invest substantially more in basic research on new energy sources, fuel-economy technology, materials science and the like that will ultimately benefit the automotive industry, along with many others. I believe Washington should raise energy research spending to $20 billion a year, from the $4 billion that is spent today. The research could be done at universities, at research labs and even through public-private collaboration. The federal government should also rectify the imbedded tax penalties that favor foreign carmakers.
But dont ask Washington to give shareholders and bondholders a free pass they bet on management and they lost.
The American auto industry is vital to our national interest as an employer and as a hub for manufacturing. A managed bankruptcy may be the only path to the fundamental restructuring the industry needs. It would permit the companies to shed excess labor, pension and real estate costs. The federal government should provide guarantees for post-bankruptcy financing and assure car buyers that their warranties are not at risk.
In a managed bankruptcy, the federal government would propel newly competitive and viable automakers, rather than seal their fate with a bailout check.
Romney did not indicate that he wanted to liquidate the auto companies. He did say there should be guarantees and government help.
Obama lied. Lets see how the Fact Checkers do on this.
Thanks for the details. Chris Wallace on Fox nailed this just after the debate. R surrogates come out swinging on this and the Navy’s demand to maintain fleet strength.
Chris Wallace proved this last night. He quoted from the actual article, and said Romney's statements were factual, and Obama's weren't. He also fact-checked Romney's and Obama's troop status agreement for Iraq, and found Romney was right, and Obama was wrong. He additionally fact-checked the bayonets and horses comment Obama made, saying Fox News had been tweeted by a Marine who said they still train with bayonets. Again, Obama didn't know his ass from a hole in the ground.
“A managed bankruptcy may be the only path to the fundamental restructuring the industry needs. It would permit the companies to shed excess labor, pension and real estate costs.”
Aye, there’s the rub. For in shedding those excess labor costs, what unions may come?
Are you saying the King lied? Oh the pain, the sorrow! How could we have misjudged our leader? Are you sure??? You must have heard incorrectly...or...it was probably Bush’s fault.
I saw a discussion of this on FOX a few minutes ago. They also showed Obama campaigning on the "trust" theme--saying that Romney says one thing today, and a different thing years ago. He was banging on the auto theme.
I think the Axelrod character assassination focus grope came up with the meme that Romney had to be hammered for changing positions, which is ironic when you consider what a shameless liar Obama is. It also is consistent with what Obama was aggressively trying to sell during the debate with quotes like, "The problem is, none of that is true."
Spell check Obama is a horrible man
Nah.....they’re into birds, bayonets, horses, condoms and moving FoWard. I don’t think they will get it.
0bama learned how to play the media a while back. He knows that he can lie and pretty much get away with it, because few actually fact check and when they find he lied, even fewer report it. In the meantime he gets an effective sound-bite and the morons that support him are satisfied.
Game, set, match. The truth simply isn’t in these people.
Thanks for that information. Because I’m a 65 year old female, and don’t personally know anyone who has recently served, I’m going to excuse myself for not knowing much about bayonet training today. You’d think that someone who professes to care so much about our men and women in uniform, and who just happens to be Commander-in-Chief, would know all about the training our troops receive. Obama’s a clueless fool.
Minor detail I know but Obummer's people could say that Romney is in favor of bankrupting companies and it would be believed by some.
Debate Fact Check: Obama Would Have Kept Thousands Of Troops In Iraq Under The Status Of Forces Agreement
THE FACTS: Fox News Chris Wallace: I Think You Have To Give The Points To Mitt Romney On That
Romney Was Right, Obama Was Wrong. Obama Wanted And Failed To Get A Status Of Forces Agreement. FOX NEWS CHRIS WALLACE: Well, in fact, I think you have to give the points to Mitt Romney on that, provided as part of the troop withdrawal by George W. Bush and in a deal with the Iraqi Prime Minister is that there would be a status of forces agreement and that there would be a residual force there was talk of it as little as 5,000. The military wanted closer to 20,000. The person put in charge of it was Joe Biden, the Vice President, and at one point he said I will bet you my Vice Presidency, Malaki, the Iraqi prime minister will extend the status of forces agreement. But it all fell apart. They never got it, but its clear Romney was right, Obama was wrong. Obama wanted and failed to get a status of forces agreement. (Fox News, 10/22/12)
Obama must think only Corpsemen use bayonets
