For the third consecutive year, Area Development magazine’s editors have conducted a survey of a select group of highly respected location consultants who work with a nationwide client base. We asked the consultants to name their top-5 state choices in 14 site selection categories.
States were ranked in each of the 14 categories based on the number of times they were named as a "top-5" choice by the responding consultants. According to the results, the top-10 states for doing business are Texas, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, Louisiana, Tennessee, Indiana, Mississippi, and Oklahoma, in that order... The top-five states were each mentioned in at least 8 of 14 categories.
[Interestingly nine of the top ten states are southern states. Indiana was the lone non-southern state.]
[Specific information about South Carolina's selection:]
South Carolina is on a roll — the Palmetto State brought in a total investment of $3.37 billion from new and expanding businesses in 2011. Manufacturing is also on the mend, with total exports up by 21 percent last year. These are just some of the reasons South Carolina was ranked second by the consultants among the Top States for Doing Business, up from fourth place in 2011.
The consultants also ranked South Carolina second for its overall business environment and overall labor climate (tied) because of its competitive labor costs and leading work force development programs. This is a result of the state’s pro-active approach to building a ready and willing work force that provides the advanced skill sets companies need for their new operations. ReadySC, South Carolina’s work force development program, has trained more than 250,000 workers for nearly 2,000 companies.
“It’s important that we have people who have the ability to perform high-technology work and who are willing to continue to learn,” says Marco Cavazzoni, vice president and general manager of final assembly and delivery for Boeing Commercial Airplanes in North Charleston. “This is an environment where everyone rallies for a common cause, and people here are aligned with the very high goals we have set for this facility.”

Oh, man I can’t believe Illinois is not on that list. Oh, wait, that is the list of TOP states.
The only drawback is now you’re gonna have a buch of liberal Yankees flooding down south looking for jobs.
All in the Bible Belt. Hmmmm.
I expect it’s more a case of, “In spite of the Cowboys we’re number 1.” :)

All the Yankees who laughed at “the south will rise again” can laugh no more. How’s that Obuma Yugo electric vehicle from GM selling these days? Take it for a drive across the Macinaw Bridge, and let’s see if it floats or swims with the fishes.

We welcome them with open arms. Most come because of jobs AND they have young kids and the schools are awesome.
