The big blaster stations in the midwest were still AM in the late 70’s. KOA (was it Denver) and another out of Little Rock permeated the nights with 100,000 watts and some skip.

FM stations were cleaner but much more local IIRC, and had DJs spinning non-commercial vinyl in hushed tones.

“Beaker Street” was a big deal.

I always kept lot's of canned food in the campers.
There was always a few lbs of Celebrity canned bacon in there.

AM was great because you could be in the middle of nowhere and get the baseball game or Mexican border radio.

I was on the gulf of Mexico a few weeks ago with FReepers and could get WBAP out of Dallas at night and in the mornings on a handheld portable.

US AM stations are 50,000 watts max.

Late nights: KOA Denver, WSB Atlanta, KAAY Little Rock Beeker Street with Clyde Clifford, WHO Des Moines Country Music USA; seems like there was an Oklahoma City station with big reach.

Still the ‘clear channel’ powerhouses on air, though I don’t think they’re actually ‘clear channel’ anymore.

I took a pile of folks to Cleveland in 77 in the van to see the Rolling Stones; Kansas and Peter Tosh.

Oddly, Tosh stole the show LOL

KAAY was the one I was trying to remember- came in clear up in Iowa when I was in college, they rocked!

Maybe someday we’ll have an opportunity to experience life as it could be, without needless interference and devilish distraction.

Where everyone is industrious, and enjoys the fruit of their labor.

I don’t know what the future holds, quite. But, I have seen some good and decent times here in the US.

A world like that seems far away, now.
