Former Republican Secretary of State Colin Powell endorsed President Barack Obama for a second term Thursday, telling CBS This Morning that he voted for Obama in 2008 but this time was going further and publicly backing him.
Weve come out of the dive and were starting to gain altitude, Powell said. The unemployment rate is too high, people are still hurting in housing, but I see that were starting to rise up.
Powell said that when Obama took over the country was in very, very difficult straits. We were in the one of the worst recessions we had seen in recent times, close to a depression.
The fiscal system was collapsing: Wall Street was in chaos, we had 800,000 jobs lost in that first month of the Obama administration, he said. Unemployment peaked at 10 percent, so we were in real trouble. The auto industry was collapsing, housing was started to collapse, and we were in very difficult straits.
And I saw over the next several years stabilization come back in the financial community, Powell added. Housing is now starting to come back after four years; it's starting to pick up. Consumer confidence is rising."
The four-star general also said that Obama got us out of one war, started to get us out of a second war, and did not get us into any new wars.
The actions he has taken in respect to protecting us from terrorism have been very solid, Powell said. We ought to keep on the track we are on.
Powell served as secretary of state during George W. Bushs first term. He was also national security advisor in the last years of the Reagan administration and chairman of the joint chiefs of staff from 1989-1993.

This means you too General Powell.
Rush should have fun with this one.
Yes, we are “starting to rise up”.
Is General Powell ANOTHER Hasan-supporter?
One thing a racist knows .....is another racist. Just ask me. It doesn’t mean we don’t love the people we are racist against but when push comes to shove there is always a trust issue.
So is Powell now officially a former Republican, or is the headline writer just sloppy?
A useful idiot.
One Affirmative Action hire votes for another. Could the Republican Party officially ban his use of their label? He’s a Black Democrat who uses this GOP label to curry favor with Obama’s presstitutes, who incessantly point to it as a sign of Obama’s “bipartisan” support.
Rather depressing to see a hero with such a strong legacy self-destruct like this. He unintellectually bypasses Obama’s actual record for phony DNC talking points. His legacy will be forever be tainted by this lack of judgment.
Powell: “Real reason, I hate George Bush.”
This just in: Al Sharpton endorses Obama for POTUS.
So is Powell now officially a former Republican
Yes, and has been. He should man up and admit he is a black, racist democrat and get it over with.
Powell tries to put a happy face on a tanking economy that Obama will finish off with another term unfettered by the need for job approval ratings or popularity. Obama knows full well that people such as Colin Powell will excuse whatever damage he does and the media will never cease covering for him. Fortunately, Mitt Romney will likely defeat Obama on November 6th, keeping Colin Powell as irrelevant as he has been for many years.
“One Affirmative Action hire votes for another.”
Beat me to it!
This Guy is not a hero, hasn’t ever done anything to merit being a General.
Affirmative Action , better than drugs and alcoholism at destroying a person and all around him.
Enabling behavior occurs when another person, often a codependent, helps or encourages the addict to continue using drugs, either directly or indirectly. Examples of individuals involved in enabling behavior are a spouse hiding the addict’s disease from neighbors or their children by lying for the addict and a so-called “friend” giving the addict money to buy drugs.
Michelle Malkin (?) called him a “Stealth Democrat” useful only to make Republicans look like easy cross-dressers/trans-sexuals/schizophrenics/back-stabbers...
How about just deprtation to China, North Korea or Saudi Arabia, no test?
She’s certainly got something there.
Color me surprised. The brutha’s really do stick together no matter what.
Colin Powell was a political general, like Weasley Clark. The real generals are like Norman Schwarzkopf.
What he really means is “vote for the guy with the same race as me.”
“Storm’n Norman won the war that our media gave this useful idiot the credit for”
Ah, my favorite choice for President 20 years ago.
While I cannot blame him for not trying, it is disappointing that he chose to play golf rather than lead us to fight the next good fight, this time politically.
Had it not been for Pres. Reagan and the Republican Party, this power schmuck would never have become a general.
He and Richard Armitage are both guilty of treason.
So, it's only natural he would endorse Obama at the very time we are finding out about the treasonous actions of Obama, Hillary, Carney and Susan Rice not to mention a whole ration of people “serving their country?” at the National Security Council and State Department.
"Holy crap Ange! Who'd uh thunk! Shocking I tell ya!"
Until Obama came along Colin Powell was the quintessential affirmative action poster child. A mediocrity in the military who would have never advanced beyond the level of Colonel had it not been for pigmentation and a mediocrity as Sec of State. The only reason he became a Republican after being a Democrat was because it was Republicans who advanced his career beyond his level of competence.
Check out his part in the My Lai Massacre.
The bloom fell of the rose when he took the uniform off. In the military you are required to keep your politics to yourself. Powell is just showing us who he has always been.
Not such a "hero" after all.
Can anyone find an example of an ex-high-ranking member of the administration of one party supporting the candidate of the other party? I simply can’t recall any.
Another dud, washed out wanna be. Time for Colin to get out of the GOP and join up with the libtards. Good-bye assclown!
"...The actions he has taken in respect to protecting us from terrorism have been very solid, Powell said. We ought to keep on the track we are on.
I can't believe I'm actually reading this after Benghazi. We "ought to keep on the track we are on" after four Americans were murdered on 9/11, and POTUS and his people continue to lie to us about it??!!
He then goes on to slam Romney because his plan supposedly won't pay for defense because of tax cuts, blah, blah, blah... while conveniently ignoring the fact that Obama's massive defense cuts under sequestration will decimate the military.
Embarrassing and disgraceful.
Powell: “Real reason, my wife doesn’t want to be excluded from the black social circles in DC.”
Another asswipe voting his DNA. I never liked Powell much, and it was pretty clear to me that he was shoved up the chain of command purely for political (i.e. PC) purposes. It was bad enough that he backed Bathhouse Barry last time, but this time it is beyond question that he’s a walking, talking disaster area. Powell confirmed for the world that he never deserved most of his promotions, and never deserved to be Sec of State. Scumbag!
Thats kind of what I was thinking although I believe Powell and Chaney were the ones at odds.
Without Bush Powell would be a nobody. Bush was warned that this man would lead him to the gallows but he trusted him. Bush would later learn that Powell worked both sides of the fence.
I never like Colin Powell since he retired. Like many corporate executives, they are too liberal and elitists. IMHO, Colon can shove it up where the sun don’t shine.
