HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah (CBS St. Louis) Boeing successfully tests a new missile that can take out electronic targets with little collateral damage.
The aerospace company tested the microwave missile last week on a two-story building on the Utah Test and Training Range where computers and electronic systems were turned on to gauge the effects of the missiles radio waves, according to a Boeing press release.
The missile, known as CHAMP (Counter-electronics High-powered Advanced Missile Project), fired a burst of High Powered Microwaves at the building, successfully knocking out the electronic systems and computers, and even taking out the television cameras recording the test...

Boeing should have kept this under wraps.
Agreed. A device that can knock out the electronics on specific buildings is not something to publish for everyone to know.
By the way, can this be countered with ordinary microwave appliances like cellphones triangulated a stealth fighter to be shot down over Bosnia?
I want some sharks with frickin’ microwaves on their heads!
Imagine if one of these things can be fired from a stealth platform
There are a couple of possibilities:
1. The wrong people already knew about this through leaks or espionage.
2. This is part of a disinformation campaign — the capabilities of the device are being inflated, to scare (say) Iran, and cause them to mis-allocate defensive resources.
If they have this weapon they had better figure out a way to shield against it, because if we can do it chances are that other countries can do it as well.
In todays world , knock out the electronics and we are helpless.
"Now what we need are land mines that look like prayer mats"
Why? It’s not like it’s breaking tech, really. Just implementation to a specific and precise missile.
This seems like the ideal auto accessory to deal with drivers who cut me off in traffic.
zapping a car in front of you seems like a not good idea.
I wonder if this could take out the guidance package on an ICBM.
But what if the terrorists don't have microwaves?
what were you doing in my kitchen?
The idea may need further consideration, but I am thinking it would not usually be difficult to just go around them when their car stalls. I’m assuming they would come to a gradual stop. Would love to test it out. Seems such opportunities are quite frequent.
Popcorn needs only 3 minutes at the most.
No secrets her people, been easy to do for years.
Why do we need to know this?
Is nothing other than Obama’s college transcripts and Birth Records kept secret anymore?
You forget one thing.
Obama is president.
Oh, yeah. That.
LOL!! That's freakin' AWESOME!
Why should Boeing have kept it under wraps? It’s not like this is new or secret technology. Eureka Aerospace demonstrated similar technology that would allow police to fry an automobile’s electronics from a squad car or helicopter, over 7 years ago.
This is nothing that our enemies weren’t already aware of. This is as groundbreaking as mounting machine guns on biplanes. Everyone knew it was coming long before the guns were mounted on the first plane.
And beyond defense targets, it’s not hard to come up with the high-value private sector / economic targets.
Its not like this is new or secret technology.
So while the thought isn’t new, Boeing’s technology certainly is. Our enemies knew about stealth technology, but we didn’t go around talking about it. I just think future military applications should be kept under wraps.
Some noteworthy articles about politics, foreign or military affairs, IMHO, FReepmail me if you want on or off my list.
It’s not exactly a new idea ~ been around for a long enough time it shows up as a staple in hugo gernsback sci fi from 1926 on. here’s a picture: http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/yhst-90099475409935_2226_14861792
All prayer mats are land mines.
Sounds like an email I just got:
Thought you might want to consider getting on board early....
A Canadian engineer just started his own business in Afghanistan .
He's making land mines that look like prayer mats.
It's doing well. He says prophets are going through the roof...
Now that’s how ya make a prophet sheik themselves ....:o)
Metzuyan Yehuda !.....
