Panetta: US lacked early info on Benghazi attack
boston.com ^ | 10/25 | boston.com

Posted on 10/25/2012 1:35:35 PM PDT by RummyChick

The U.S. military did not quickly intervene during the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya last month because military leaders did not have adequate intelligence information and felt they should not put American forces at risk, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Thursday.

In his most extensive comments to date on the unfolding controversy surrounding the attack in Benghazi, Panetta said U.S. forces were on heightened alert because of the anniversary of 9/11 and prepared to respond. But, he said, the attack happened over a few hours and was over before the U.S. had the chance to know what was really happening.

So I guess the terrorists can attack us for 7 hours and we do nothing. Glad that didn’t happen on 9/11/2001

Think about what you just said. How TRUE. How long was it from the time the 2nd tower was hit until all non-military aircraft were grounded? A couple hours, at the most?

Kinda makes one think of those burning helicopters in Iran.

I never thought I’d see this kind of incompetency twice in one lifetime.

maybe he’s trying to make Obama out to not be a Jimmy Carter when it comes to foreign affairs, remember 1979?

In an ironic way, Obama made sure no hostages got took, bad news for the 4 dead.

I wonder if Leon uses ‘green’ fuel in his aircraft? Save the oceans is his previous thing, yaknow.

EVEN FReepers knew what was going on.

Panetta must have been in on this from the planning
stage with Obama and Hillary months ago.

So the real time emails and pleas for help, not to mention the security system and Predator drone videos weren’t understandable? Can our government ever tell the truth anymore?

Panetta: US lacked early info on Benghazi attack

Yet you had enough information to witness a mob that didn't exist start a riot over a video that had been out for months that nobody saw. And to stick with that story for almost a month.

Wow - that live video feed from the circling drone and the live/real-time messages from the consulate compound must not have been very convincing.

Add to it - for 7 hours, the assault raged on - in 7 hours, choppers with real fighting men could have been on the scene.

7 hours...

Needs to be a Romney campaign add over the next several days.

I assumed that good ole' Sec. Defense (Sec. non-Defense) Leon Panetta, would crawl out from one of Hillary's pant legs before long to spout some drivel and hope people found it plausible.

This crap is just great, we can't do anything because we don't want to put the lives of American military "at risk" since we don't know what's going on in Lybia, even though we're looking at it live and in color.

Pretty miserable claiming we will sacrifice four (4) lives for Islam rather than send our brave American military to kick some butt attempting to save the four (4), but gee that one's a hard call and Obama promised me that I'd not be asked to make any hard calls as he and Hillary would take care of the "heavy lifting."

Risk of what? They’d been putting assets over Libya over and over in their fever to take out Qaddafi and save the so-called Libyan freedom fighters, but it was too risky to deploy anything to save Americans?

That is an absolutely pathetic and unbelievable excuse. They would have had no idea how long the people there might hold out. They could have put assets in the air and had up to two hours to decide whether to use them while they were enroute. But nothing was deployed.

Panetta's excuse is no different than a field commander getting a call from one of his squads saying they were pinned down and being overrun and responding "We probably can't get to them. Let's forget about it."

They send the Ambassador into the terrorists den with little security, (on 9/11) no rapid response protection and then lie about the attack caused from a video for 2 weeks afterwards when they had the e-mails during the attack.

The decision to not use military forces was made at 5pm in the meeting with Obama, Biden and Panetta. Dempsey’s a lap dog. If he had any honor he’d resign. The State Department flew a DC-3 into Benghazi you stinking cowards. A World War Two airplane. But you can’t send any modern jets because you just don’t know what’s going on? Ask the State Department pilot. Shit, get rid of all our admirals and generals and we’ll put FEDEX pilots in charge. Why are we paying these admirals and generals? The purpose of the military is to protect American citizens. If they can’t do that, then what the hell do we need them for? Dempsey....what a piece of work....can call a Pastor and ask him to give up his First Amendment rights, but can’t help Americans under fire in Benghazi. What a worthless puke.

They had live feed that told them that our people were being shot at and burned out. They shouldn’t need to wait for a lawyerly brief as to culpability to know that those people needed help. They froze. They froze because they were afraid of looking like Les Aspin - the Hero of Mogadishu. Instead, they wind up looking worse. Aspin at least had the decency to resign.

From keywiki.org,

“In spite of Lucy Haessler’s involvement with the Soviet front Women’s International Democratic Federation, Congressman Leon Panetta placed a tribute in the Congressional Record, April 11, 1984, to mark Haessler’s 80th birthday.”

He’s been left wing for quite a long time; I don’t know if during his college days or his military service in Viet Nam. By the late 1960’s he was working in the Dept of HEW, apparently working on civil rights. He switched to the Democratic party in 1971.

He’s paid homage to various socialists/communists over the years in speeches, etc.

keywiki.org has some info.

His left wing background I guess has been scrubbed by the current administration; he had another tribute for an outright Communist, Hugh DeLacy, inserted into the Congressional Record in 1983. I guess that was ok because Hugh DeLacy had served in Congress.

Many leftists, back in the 1970’s, made a point of laying low and becoming part of government and other institutions.
