DEFIANCE, Ohio (AP) — Republican Mitt Romney is placing television ads in Minnesota, a move that pushes his presidential campaign into a state Democrats have held for more than three decades.

Republicans and Democrats who track campaign spending confirmed late Thursday that Romney will begin running ads in Minnesota over the weekend. The investment is described as a small buy that Democrats suggest is simply intended to generate media coverage and force President Barack Obama's campaign to invest there as well.

I wonder which markets. Rochester would likely mean advertising aimed at Wisconsin and/or Iowa. Minneapolis is such a large market, though it would carry over into Wisconsin. Same with Duluth.

I’ve seen some Romney ads being broadcast here in the Twin Cities. I was kinda surprised at first but then it occurred to me that our media market extends well into western Wisconsin.

There are some population-heavy counties (particularly along the Mn-Wi border) that Romney needs to do well in if he has a chance at winning Wisconsin. Romney is performing better than expected here in Minnesota - but I think these ads are aimed more at Wisconsin than us.

Cool! I was hoping they would do this. If Romney is ahead by 3% nationally, Minnesota should be in play.

Take Wisconsin and then Ohio becomes gravy.

Take Minnesota and we are looking at a landslide.

Mpls-StP advertising hits St Cloud too. Central Minnesota is already a conservative part of the state. We are part of Michele Bachman’s the District.

I know Romney will carry Benton, Stearns, and Sherburne counties. Hopefully advertising will increase the Romney/Ryan vote here. Additionally, it will give the GOP in MN a bit of encouragement. We took control of both Houses of our legislature in 2010. We need some help from the national GOP too. I am happy to hear that we will be seeing some GOP ads here in MN. It is a bit disheartening to always hear about Ohio all the time.

On Tuesday evening I was at a GOP fundraiser and the speculation is that R/R will carry the 8th congressional district. I’m not sure I agree. But, this is the district that has Duluth, and the iron miners. It is historically liberal, but pro-life. When Chip Cravaack defeated Jim Oberstar in 2010, it was a seismic political event here in MN!!!! The miners are ethnic voters being mostly Croatians, Italians, and some Finns. They are pro-lifers. We shall see if their disappointment with the Democratic party’s pandering to the environmentalists is reflected in their votes.

The last poll I saw on MN had Obama ahead of R/R by only 4 points, and I see Karl Rove has moved MN from Obama to “leans Obama”.

Go Romney/Ryan!

wonder why Romney isn't running ads in California. I was driving to work today, and it suddenly struck me that California is completely dead to Obama. Four years ago the drive to work in the morning was a sea of Obama sunset bumper stickers. Before that it was all John Kerry. This year I don't think I have seen a single Obama sticker.

Not that there are a lot of Romney stickers, but I did notice a young woman in a pick-up with a Romney bumper sticker, for whom I had an immediate crush.

I even work at a major university, with a bunch of socialists and liberal students, and I haven't heard a peep about about Obama. Again, four years ago that was TOTALLY different. I guess with Shepard Fairey in jail, or on probation (or whatever) and schools being hammered economically for four years now, there isn't a lot of enthusiasm left anymore.

It would be nice to see just one Romney ad on TV just to feel like my vote is going to count.

I wish he would run some in California all I see is Obama commercials here and I also saw a Diane Feinstein ad which I thought was pretty odd I have never seen an ad for her before and I have lived here for a very long time.

I wish he’d put some ads up in Philadelphia. I really thought after he spoke at Valley Forge a few weeks back that he was going to start advertising here. His PA internal polling must be abysmal for him to be ignoring this state. I have trouble accepting that.

Good news - not only that he feels the ads may be helpful, but the fact he has the cash to put into them. Until the election, I’m a certifiable schizoid - feeling good that Zero may be gone and scared to death that Zero will be there next year...
