(AP) Absentee ballots may have been destroyed in crash TALLAHASSEE, Fla. Federal officials say that absentee ballots being sent to U.S. military serving in Afghanistan may have been burned in a plane crash.

A top official in the Federal Voting Assistance Program this week notified election officials across the nation that a transport plane crashed at Shindad Air Base on Oct. 19.

The crash resulted in the destruction of 4,700 pounds of mail inbound to troops serving in the area.

What a remarkable piece of bad luck.

Of course, there won’t be time to replace the Absentee Ballots in time for them to be marked by the servicemen for whom they were intended. There is, unfortunately, no legal mechanism in place to allow this to happen, I’m sure we’ll be told.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR SERVICE MEMBERS IN AFGHANISTAN

October 24, 2012 — Alexandria, Va. – On Friday, October 19, 2012, a contracted transport aircraft crashed at Shindand Air Base in Afghanistan and was destroyed along with 4,700 pounds of mail inbound to Afghanistan.

We do not know if there were any ballots in the destroyed mail, but all of the mail was bound for the zip code 09382 (Shindand, Farah, and Camp Stone (also known as Herat)).

All military and overseas voters who have not received requested ballots from their local election official yet are strongly encouraged to fill out the Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot (FWAB) at FVAP.gov and return it as soon as possible. All military and overseas voters who have received requested ballots from their local election official should complete it and return it as soon as possible.

If you receive your State ballot after submitting the FWAB, vote and return the State ballot as well. You will only receive one vote as the State will only count your FWAB if the State ballot is not received by the deadline. If your State ballot is received by the deadline your State ballot will be counted and the FWAB will be disregarded.

FVAP sent an email to all local election officials recommending that if they sent any ballots to the zip code 09382, they should contact the voter and resend a new ballot, as the first ballot may have been destroyed in the crash and fire.

Voting Assistance Officers are informing Service members in the area impacted by this incident to submit a Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot.

Oh hell, Barry...just send some of your moslem friends over to “off” the troops so they can’t vote. You and Val-IRANIAN-of-the-DAY-Jarrett seem capable of such a move.

“Was Ron Brown on board?”

Friday night, just reading headlines, but. . .

Was this before 911 II? while Hillary was on the bus (vs under) when she would lend her expertise in arranging?

.......................why are there not electronic voting machines at all bases??............................

Probably because our brave troops are from every district, in every county, in every state in the union, so the programming would be extremely difficult.

However, it sure would be easy for every overseas military personnel to electronically sign into his local voting district, upload the local ballot, provide his personal ID, and securely provide his vote.

No need for envelope garbage!

The mail being lost was a tragedy, but what about the crew? They would be my first concern.

I have been to a lot of websites where I enter a Zip Code and it knows my exact location. I have been to websites that I punch in a personal password and it knows all my info there.

The coding for the machine would be no more complicated. Scan your voter card and wa-la there it is and once you push SEND it can be sent to your CR district.

I doubt it would be much more complicated than Yahoo email or Ebay payment system
