POLICE are trying to find a home invader who was badly hurt when he tried to force his way past an 83-year-old black belt home owner last night.

The home invader, a muscular man in his thirties who may be linked to other burglaries, broke into the high-set home in Gilruth Rd, Kenmore at about 8.30pm.

Inside were Edwin Dowdy, 83, and his wife Jutta, 76, who have in the property in the quiet Kenmore street since 1966.

When the couple - who both have black belts in the Japanese art of Aikido - realised there was an intruder in the house Mr Dowdy grabbed a knife from the lounge room he had kept for security and went to confront the burglar and warn him he was armed.

He said he confronted the intruder and told him he had a knife, but the man tried to push past him and ran onto the blade.

The guy is still (barely) alive.

What was unreasonable?

“”The owner of the home has been interviewed....the reality is we don’t know what injuries have been caused, we don’t know who the injuries have been caused to. We have insufficient evidence in relation to what sort of actions have taken place in the house,”

So the main investigation is into if the home owner should be charged? Amazing.

From the tone of the article the police are more concerned about the assailant (who has probably burgled multiple homes) than the victims.

The article is rife with warnings about not confronting people trying to rob your house and not harming them too much. Sounds like they are trying to “figure out” what happened inside the house - they obviously don’t believe this crook ran into the knife. Also, they are looking for him - because he needs “medical attention” - not because he has two of the woman’s pocketbooks.

If this was the southern US the law would be saying, “Good job”. Australia seems to be losing it.

I like it and push past him and ran into the blade.

That's his story and he's sticking to it.

It should say “pushed past me and ran into a bullet”.

And supposse this 83 year-old wasn’t trained in martial arts? What if he was confined to a wheelchair, what level of force would be reasonable then, the amount of force his attacker inflicts on him?

Once a subject, always a subject.

As for finding the knifed crook, watch teh sky!

Sooner or later, the vultures on wings arrive to find what the vultures on two feet (cops, lawyers, ad nauseam) caused.

A person may only use “reasonable” force to protect themselves and their property and they still don't know what happened inside the house?

I think this happened in Australia as I see initials that suggest that, but could be wrong.

So, they don't believe the home owner since they say they still don't know what happened in the house. And, it sounds like they don't want a homeowner using a knife in self defense.

I think their “reasonable force” is a crock of crap ‘cause it sounds like their definition of those words is actually nothing that would cause injury.

In Texas, we have an actual law that says one may use deadly force to protect life and/or property. If someone breaks in my house, I'm not using a knife, I'm using hollow points flying out of my 38 and several of them to make sure he isn't going to move again - forever. In Texas, I will get a commendation of valor and medal for that.

That old fellow even warned the bad guy - I'm not warning - his warning ended when he got inside.

"Our advice is that people should avoid confronting anybody it's not my advice that people should arm themselves and confront anyone in a house," Detective Inspector for Brisbane West Robert Hitch said.

Go do something unnatural to yourself, Hitch.

I put Australia in the title, but I think it made the title too long. Australia is in the topics, and downunder is in the keywords.
