This Is What You Should Have At Home When The Frankenstorm Hits

October 27, 2012

There's a real possibility that Hurricane Sandy, aka the "Frankenstorm", could cause serious disruption to major metropolitan areas in the North East states in the next few days.

As such, its better to be over-prepared than under-prepared. NYC.gov has some suggestions for a Emergency Supply Kit that you can keep at home:

One gallon of drinking water per person per day Non-perishable, ready-to-eat canned foods and manual can opener
First aid kit
Flashlight*
Battery-operated AM/FM radio and extra batteries (you can also buy wind-up radios that do not require batteries)
Whistle
Iodine tablets or one quart of unscented bleach (for disinfecting water ONLY if directed to do so by health officials) and eyedropper (for adding bleach to water)
Personal hygiene items: soap, feminine hygiene products, toothbrush and toothpaste, etc.
Phone that does not rely on electricity
Child care supplies or other special care items

There's also some suggestions for a "go bag" that could be taken with you in the case of an evacuation:

Copies of your important documents in a waterproof and portable container (insurance cards, photo IDs, proof of address, etc.)
Extra set of car and house keys
Credit and ATM cards and cash, especially in small denominations. We recommend you keep at least $50-$100 on hand.
Bottled water and non-perishable food such as energy or granola bars
Flashlight
Note: Traditional flashlight bulbs have limited lifespans. Light Emitting Diode (LED) flashlights, however, are more durable and last up to 10 times longer than traditional bulbs.
Battery-operated AM/FM radio and extra batteries
Keep a list of the medications each member of your household takes,

Make sure the “whistle” isn’t a conservative dog-whistle...

This is so gay. Does the government have to treat EVERYTHING after 9/11 like a red alert crisis? After the economy is fixed, the next project should be dismantling this fear/safety/security society.
They love the impending disaster view of life because it allows them to function in an expediant, always in an emergency, manner.

We do not need to structure society so that a 9/11 event is just another day at work. But now we are briming to the gills with SWAT teams, Emergency management, FEMA, “ready.gov”, color code terror alerts, etc etc.

Currently, Homeland security has about the same number of personnel as the USMC and TWICE the budget. And it’s aimed squarely at us. It must be stopped.

They forgot the AR with five 30 round mags, the 12 ga loaded with 00 Buck and the 1911 .45 ACP.

Oh yeah that’s right.... this is New York. God forbid you might be able to defend yourself.

Make sure that your homeowners insurance policy and home inventory is up to date. Looters will be by to steal everything that is not bolted down after you are ordered to evacuate for your safety and the convenience and safety of the looters.

Isn’t this all stuff that a well-ordered household should have on hand as a matter of course?

A slightly more reasonable list for disasters (but in your defense, if someone is ready for when TSHTF as you advise they will probably be OK for Frankenstorm).

Note the absence of chickens and goats ;)

Who came up with “Frankenstorm” anyhow. It’s unusual for the season and it’s coming at Halloween... still yes I’d have to say it’s a gin up. It’s about as menacing as the ten year old kid next door in a Frankenstein monster suit, trick or treating.

It is because it is a mix of a hurricane from the south AND a winter storm from the north meeting right at landfall -- unusual enough to be a freak occurrence. And I think the Halloween reference might be in there somewhere.

It might be a heck of a punch -- the hurricane part is getting more power even as we speak. I wouldn't laugh it off if I was in its path.
