California voters sent a clear message four years ago when they overwhelmingly approved Proposition 2, a ballot measure banning the "cruel confinement" of certain types of farm animals.
What's followed has been nothing but confusion, complain commercial egg farmers. They're seeking certainty on what kind of enclosures for the state's 20 million laying hens will be considered legal under the law.
Proposition 2 did not provide specific dimensions for hen cages. It simply said that chickens needed to be able to perform certain behaviors, such as standing, turning and spreading their wings without bumping into the side of a cage or another hen.
The 2015 deadline to comply or face possible criminal prosecution is in the wings.

So another industry will get moonbeamed and people will buy Arizona or Nevada eggs. The golden state becomes just plain Cal as in a “clockwork orange”.

The solution is readily apparent. To assure adequate size, simply bribe the cage measurer.

I was responding to a comment about requiring out of state egg producers to comply with the California law. Specifically, if an out of state baker uses eggs that do not comply with California law, can he sell his products in California? This law might actually hurt commercial egg consumers as much as California egg producers.

Bread will soon require handmade brick ovens powered by the sun to be baked in.
And donkeys can no longer be used to haul water or supplies.
Legislators think they must do something about everything.

The egg opertions will leave California and take their jobs with them.
The cost of eggs will go up in the Calif markets for the consumer because the cost of transporting them from a longer distance will have to be re-captured.
California—you just never seem to learn about the laws you want passed.
I remember a big flap years ago in Los Angeles about the fact that dry cleaners charged more for a woman’s blouse than a man’s shirt.
There isn’t a person in America above the age of 9 who doesn’t realize that women’s blouses are far more complicated to press than a man’s shirt.
But—sure enough, the women who wanted to push this, must have thought they would get the cost of their dry cleaning dropped. They sure were going to handcuff those dry cleaning establishments!!!
Of course, that didn’t happen.
The cost of a man’s shirt was RAISED and now both members of the household —wife & husband — pay the higher rate.
That was a complete backfire & this egg cage crap is on the same track.
I once worked for the largest egg producer west of the Mississippi.
They employed over 750 in 7 states, but most were in California, IIRC.
Kiss those jobs goodbye.

I will add that in Nevada, there is no corp or personal income tax. Same in Texas.
The facilities would cost less because of the lower cost of land & property taxes.
I hadn’t realized that the law also covers eggs produced outside the state.
I don’t think they can enforce that.
IF they can enforce that—let’s look at all the items that will disappear from the grocery shelves:
Eggs—Egg noodles/pasta—Chickens—Chicken soup fo all kinds—Anything which is prepared with eggs, such as the dough in certain base items like frozen pizza.
I am sure others here on FR could make a much larger list.
This is just plain crazy, but it is a PERFECT example of the power that the Enviros & Greenies have over the voting populace of California.
When there are no more eggs or chickens in your local supermarket, look at yourself for voting such crap in the first place.
When your local KFC or El Pollo Loco is no longer there, blame yourself. When you can no longer get your tasty Egg McMuffin or a chicken sandwich at McDonald’s—blame yourself.
None of you ever worked at McDonald’s—KFC—the local grocery store??? You are putting more & more people out of work and drawing down tax revenues. Almost every fast food outlet sells something with chicken in it. Where will your kids & grandkids get that all important first job???
