The East Coast is bracing Monday for the impact of a powerful Category 1 hurricane as it barrels toward the mid-Atlantic with 95 mph winds and a storm surge that forecasters called "life-threatening."
Hurricane Sandy bore down on the East Coast early Monday, its front edge sending tide-enhanced surges over boardwalks from Delaware to New Jersey a full 12 hours before the eye of the enormous, 900-mile wide storm was to make landfall. Some 60 million people live in the path of the mega-storm and many likely face power outages in the coming hours and days.
The National Guard was deployed along the densely-populated Atlantic coast, and public transportation in New York, Philadelphia and Washington D.C., was suspended. Airports were expected to shut down by Monday afternoon as the weather system experts are calling "Frankenstorm" churned in from the sea. The hurricane is on a collision course with a winter storm and a cold front, and high tides from a full moon make it a rare hybrid storm that could be felt all the way to the Great Lakes.

There are a lot of FReepers in the path of this storm, those who live in NJ, PA, NY, and the New England states.
Prayers up for the safety of everyone and it’s potential for an impact on the election.
I don’t trust the current regime,.... er.... administration.
FoxNews on-scene reporter: the waves are angry.
NOAA: Could be the biggest hurricane to EVER hit the US.
Did I hear correctly that Bloomberg told his people to get out??
Here’s a link to the National Hurricane Center and some discussion on the storm....

HIGHER GUSTS. SANDY IS EXPECTED TO TRANSITION INTO A FRONTAL OR

STORM SURGE...THE COMBINATION OF AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS STORM SURGE
AND THE TIDE WILL CAUSE NORMALLY DRY AREAS NEAR THE COAST TO BE
FLOODED BY RISING WATERS. THE WATER COULD REACH THE FOLLOWING
DEPTHS ABOVE GROUND IF THE PEAK SURGE OCCURS AT THE TIME OF HIGH
TIDE...
NC NORTH OF SURF CITY INCLUDING PAMLICO/ALBEMARLE SOUNDS...4 TO 6 FT
SE VA AND DELMARVA INCLUDING LOWER CHESAPEAKE BAY...2 TO 4 FT
UPPER AND MIDDLE CHESAPEAKE BAY...1 TO 3 FT

ELSEWHERE FROM OCEAN CITY MD TO THE CT/RI BORDER...4 TO 8 FT
CT/RI BORDER TO THE SOUTH SHORE OF CAPE COD INCLUDING BUZZARDS
BAY AND NARRAGANSETT BAY...3 TO 6 FT
CAPE COD TO THE MA/NH BORDER INCLUDING CAPE COD BAY...2 TO 4 FT
MA/NH BORDER TO THE U.S./CANADA BORDER...1 TO 3 FT
SURGE-RELATED FLOODING DEPENDS ON THE RELATIVE TIMING OF THE SURGE
AND THE TIDAL CYCLE...AND CAN VARY GREATLY OVER SHORT DISTANCES.
GIVEN THE LARGE WIND FIELD ASSOCIATED WITH SANDY...ELEVATED WATER
LEVELS COULD SPAN MULTIPLE TIDE CYCLES RESULTING IN REPEATED AND
EXTENDED PERIODS OF COASTAL AND BAYSIDE FLOODING. IN ADDITION...
ELEVATED WATERS COULD OCCUR FAR REMOVED FROM THE CENTER OF SANDY.
FURTHERMORE...THESE CONDITIONS WILL OCCUR REGARDLESS OF WHETHER
SANDY IS A TROPICAL OR POST-TROPICAL CYCLONE. FOR INFORMATION
SPECIFIC TO YOUR AREA...PLEASE SEE PRODUCTS ISSUED BY YOUR LOCAL
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE.

NEXT ADVISORY
Ever?? Really ? I suppose we will see.
Up here in Hartford it isn’t a big deal yet.
Light drizzle and a gentle breeze.
It’s supposed to pick up around noon, after which we’ll have 55mph gusts until tomorrow noon. We might lose power and perhaps some branches. Maybe. Its a different story on the coast.
So Sandy will knock the rest of the leaves off the trees and I’ll only have to spend one weekend raking instead of the usual four weekends.
Seriously?
I believe Obama went on vacation to Hawaii the last time a Cat 1 hit the Gulf Coast....

Hey Mom!
Here’s a link to the Syracuse online that contains snippets of articles from many other sources.
I’m not sure about copyright restrictions for WSYR, so I’m posting the link only.
Must be in reference to its size and not its intensity.
One talking head stated that in order to fly from one side of the storm to the other would take 2 and a half hours.
Alerts are also up for the Great Lakes with waves projected to reach 22 feet around Lake Michigan just off Chicago and 25 feet in Huron, Erie and Ontario.
I feel bad for folks on the coast -- but, I used to live on the coast. I made the decision not to.
When they say ‘ biggest’, they must be referring to size and not strength. But, even then it’s questionable.
An image from high tide this morning
16 feet above mean high tide this morning due to sustained northeast winds. Just my live at the beach for 52 years observation. Tonight will be bad.
DEL-MAR-VA, West Virgina, MD, and VA is being effected also.
I was just thinking the same thing. But, I’m here in it (not on the coast) and the derecho was much worse. I guess we will see... the day is still young and then there is tomorrow. I hope I don’t eat my words.
I didn’t mean to neglect that area. As I was hitting the *POST* button, I realized that I neglected to include those as well.
Are you seeing anything out of this yet and what are you getting?
If they’re saying that they are lying. This storm covers a broad area but its a weak cat 1. People in Fl MS and LA are laughing at claims like that.
