Hurricane Sandy barrels toward East Coast, expected to bring 'life-threatening' storm surge
FoxNews.com ^ | October 29, 2012 | Fox News

Posted on 10/29/2012 6:22:57 AM PDT by metmom

The East Coast is bracing Monday for the impact of a powerful Category 1 hurricane as it barrels toward the mid-Atlantic with 95 mph winds and a storm surge that forecasters called "life-threatening."

Hurricane Sandy bore down on the East Coast early Monday, its front edge sending tide-enhanced surges over boardwalks from Delaware to New Jersey a full 12 hours before the eye of the enormous, 900-mile wide storm was to make landfall. Some 60 million people live in the path of the mega-storm and many likely face power outages in the coming hours and days.

The National Guard was deployed along the densely-populated Atlantic coast, and public transportation in New York, Philadelphia and Washington D.C., was suspended. Airports were expected to shut down by Monday afternoon as the weather system experts are calling "Frankenstorm" churned in from the sea. The hurricane is on a collision course with a winter storm and a cold front, and high tides from a full moon make it a rare hybrid storm that could be felt all the way to the Great Lakes.

There are a lot of FReepers in the path of this storm, those who live in NJ, PA, NY, and the New England states.

Prayers up for the safety of everyone and it’s potential for an impact on the election.

I don’t trust the current regime,.... er.... administration.

Up here in Hartford it isn’t a big deal yet.

Light drizzle and a gentle breeze.

It’s supposed to pick up around noon, after which we’ll have 55mph gusts until tomorrow noon. We might lose power and perhaps some branches. Maybe. Its a different story on the coast.

So Sandy will knock the rest of the leaves off the trees and I’ll only have to spend one weekend raking instead of the usual four weekends.

Ever?? Really ? I suppose we will see.

Must be in reference to its size and not its intensity.

One talking head stated that in order to fly from one side of the storm to the other would take 2 and a half hours.

Alerts are also up for the Great Lakes with waves projected to reach 22 feet around Lake Michigan just off Chicago and 25 feet in Huron, Erie and Ontario.

I'm in the middle of MA and my situation is similar. Leaves will come down. I'll get some rain. I live on 6 acres of trees, and I might lose a few. Worst case scenario, I might lose power for two days.

I feel bad for folks on the coast -- but, I used to live on the coast. I made the decision not to.

When they say ‘ biggest’, they must be referring to size and not strength. But, even then it’s questionable.

All of us know that Obama, his campaign and the main stream media are going to write the narrative and try to make him look presidental in this Sandy storm....

However ?

The word needs to get out loud, far, and wide that this is all politicizing this storm to help Obama's re-election... that's all he cares about.
Need to counter his campaign, the media with ?
WHY DIDN'T OBAMA GIVE THIS MUCH CARE AND ATTENTION FOR THOSE LIVES LOST IN BENGHAZI !!

WHY WASN'T THIS MUCH ATTENTION GIVEN IN BENGHAZI BUT IS GIVEN MUCH ATTENTION FOR SANDY ?

It's all a political stunt....
Photo ops..
The MSM will write the narrative to make him looks so presidential, therefore we should re-elect him.

16 feet above mean high tide this morning due to sustained northeast winds. Just my live at the beach for 52 years observation. Tonight will be bad.

" I believe Obama went on vacation to Hawaii the last time a Cat 1 hit the Gulf Coast.... "

Remember, it's a election year.... he needs the photo ops, MSM to make him look good.

That's another thing people need to report on, the contrast of him in that storm and now.

Yesterday afternoon.

This is accurate. I saw it with my own eyes yesterday.

Waves tonight could be twice as high. Add 12 feet to the level of the sea.

Category of the storm is irrelevant. Wind doesn't matter. It is the level of the sea that matters.

There are already a school closings. A bunch of schools are closing at noon, but they are so far out in the sticks, in the North Country, that they cover a huge area and it takes forever to get the kids to and from school. Seems to me that considering the isolated area, it’s prudent for them to close early.

We’re JUST starting to see a little breeze, only enough to stir the flags.

Mr. mm and I cleaned up all weekend, did some yard work, put away anything that we didn’t want to have to chase down the street later. We even got the snow tires on a couple of the vehicles. Two down and two to go, but the two down were the kid’s, who are off at college and cannot do it on short notice.

On a prepper thread, I saw someone advise getting cleaning done around the house, laundry, clean the kitchen, etc. That way if the power goes out, you’ve got a good supply of clean stuff to get by for a couple days. Not much else to do here anyway but wait for something to happen so I guess that’s what I’ll be doing today.

Latest advisory...winds 90...pressure all the way down to 943 MB.

This is lower than I thought it would get. Late last week some models had it at 938. Looks like they might have been right.

The pressure is almost as low as the '38 Long Is Express at its lowest...and IS lower than what it was when it got to this latitude. The pressure is almost 30 MB's lower than the Perfect Storm...

Winds are having a difficult time coming down to the surface...and aren't as high as the pressure indicates because the gradient is so spread out. BUT...VERY impressive.

I am in FL and I am not laughing at all. This storm is no joke. Yesterday at high tide in the Ft Lauderdale area storm surge was still affecting us 3 days after Sandy was made her pass by our shore a couple of hundred miles out. The size, pressure and likely collision with other systems is going to be something to see.

Afphys would love to talk meteorology with you.

Me? It’s been too long since I graduated and sadly have forgotten some of the more pertinent factors affecting storms like this.

All I know is that although we live in an area that tends to get nothing worse than snow (Central NY), I am ready for it and will be spending my off the computer time cleaning and doing laundry so if we DO lose power, I’m not stuck for clean clothes or a warm shower.

Good plan. I think winds won't do a whole lot of major damage...apart from downed trees and limbs on power lines and homes. Won't see a whole lot of structural damage due strictly to winds. But...minor damage will add up to a lot due to shear size of area impacted.

Power and surge are the issues. Already a report out on economic impacts - $30-40 Billion in economic loss. I always think that part is overblown. It's like people boycotting gas pumps on "Tuesday." Doesn't do any good because people just buy their gas on Monday or Wednesday....

We used to go to Stone Harbor, NJ for a couple weeks every summer. According to this, they’ve received 2.53 inches of rain already since midnight. The full brunt of the storm is not expected until later tonight.

We’re pretty far out in the sticks and when power goes out, it’s hours before it gets fixed on a good day.

If there’s widespread power outages, I don’t expect them to make our sparely populated little town a priority. We’re ready, though.

Perhaps pinging or FReepmailing the Admin Mod.

I asked the mods to put it at the top of the breaking news bar.

This needs to be seen because of the sheer number of people that this storm will have an impact on.
