No damage or injuries have been reported after a 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck Monday morning in eastern Arkansas.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake hit at 7.39 a.m. Monday in Cross County. The quake's epicenter was 6 miles southwest of Parkin, 16 miles north-northeast of Forrest City and about 30 miles west of Memphis, Tenn.

Is this odd that we are having so many earthquakes in so many “non-earthquake” places?
We EXPECT them along the San Andreas fault- but is AK a place we expect hurricanes?
(Maybe they are fracking there?)

Actually, the New Madrid Fault runs through this vicinity, and it caused a tremendous quake in the early 1800s. There have been studies done that show an earthquake could devastate Memphis and St. Louis.

New Madrid fault.
Actually, that is an earthquake zone. Not as often as the West Coast, but they do happen.

Not really a non earthquake place. I haven't looked at a map but the New Madrid fault isn't that far away.

I’ve read that there is evidence of major earthquakes like the big New Madrid quake moving in a southerly direction over the last several thousand years. Things like ancient sand boils in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota.
Personally I think the new Madrid quakes are a result of crustal rebound after the last ice age. Granted the glaciers didn’t reach that far south but hundreds of billions of tones of ice on the continent would have had pretty far reaching effects.

On December 16, 1811, the 400 residents of New Madrid, Missouri, were shaken out of their beds at two in the morning by a violent earthquake. Huge cracks split the ground. The waters of the Mississippi rose and fell like a great tide. Giant waves rose up and swept north, giving the impression that the river was actually flowing backwards. Boats along the river were engulfed, capsized, and theeair crews drowned.
It's one year after two New Madrid earthquakes have devastated the Mississippi Valley.
Battalions of foreign peackeepers are occupying Tennessee, at the invitation of the President. Phil Carson, (from "Enemies Foreign And Domestic"), and three strangers are hiding in a well-stocked cave, which is a guerrilla fighter's lair. Across the region Kazakh "contract peacekeepers" are wiping out the last remaining American holdouts, who have rejected the federal government's order to abandon their homes and move to "relocation centers."
This scene is in the middle of the novel.

The quake in Arkansas is no doubt related to the New Madrid fault line in central US... "400 terrified residents in the town of New Madrid, Missouri were abruptly awakened by violent shaking and a tremendous roar. It was December 16, 1811, and a powerful earthquake had just struck. This was the first of three large (magnitude 7.5 - 8.0) earthquakes and thousands of aftershocks to rock the region that winter." It is thought that this fault line is due for another big one... buckle your seat belts...
