San Diego hotelier consolidates hold as city's new media baron, promotes conservative causes

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The new media barons of America's eighth-largest city are upfront about wanting to use their newspaper to promote their agenda of downtown development and politically conservative causes — and they are making their points in a brash, bare-knuckle style.

Douglas Manchester and his partner John Lynch gave their 143-year-old newspaper a new slogan — "The World's Greatest Country & America's Finest City" — ran a front-page editorial that declared their plan to reshape the city's downtown waterfront their highest priority, and forecast doom if President Barack Obama wins re-election.

Manchester, who became wealthy building hotels during the dawn of San Diego's downtown renaissance and insists on being called "Papa Doug," bought The San Diego Union-Tribune last year and its most serious competitor, the North County Times, this month. As he and Lynch eye expansion to Los Angeles and other major cities, they are frank about seeking to use their new platforms to advance their agenda — and they think they can make a profit while they're at it.

With 99% of California liberal, the AP was able to bring attention to a tiny area of conservatism. These people will not be satisfied until they wipe us off the face of the earth. I just wish there were some conservative news service to compete with Reuters and AP.

Duncan Hunter is a good guy. His son now has his seat. SD used to be pretty conservative...prior to the 90s...education, colleges and media have shifted far too the left. The city still has old money that have significant influence.

Duke Cunningham resigned in disgrace but was actually a good guy, too. If a guy like that can go back and get corrupted, what does that say about what is going in DC?

From the article:
Tim McGuire, a journalism professor at Arizona State University, said San Diego is at the forefront of what he predicts will be a major trend of wealthy people buying newspapers to push for their agendas.

"People are going to buy and treat newspapers like sports teams," he said. "It's a toy, it's fun to have, and it gives you great power."

What does McGuire think the left has done????

I’m a third generation native San Diegan and my hometown was always very conservative, until the open borders and end of the Bracero program in the 60’s, the influx of Easterner’s in the 70’s and the homosexuals in the 80’s found it more pleasant than San Francisco. San Diego still voted Republican despite all that and still does, but not always in city wide elections or in all the US Congressional races, due to gerrymandered districts. It’s a huge County.

For example, the City of San Diego elected a lesbian City Attorney.

Roger Hedgecock was Mayor, ditto for Pete Wilson who went onto be US Senator and CA Governor.

Ah, the old SD was conservative.
We are calling Wilson a conservative now? He seemed like a wet noodle when he was mayor. I lived there when both Hedgecock and Wilson were mayor. Hedgecock had to leave in disgrace. He seems to have reoovered, though.

There are many conservative areas in Californis.

San Diego

Newport Beach/Irvine

Most of Ventura County

Numerous other pockets in Riverside Cty, and elsewhere.

Roger Hedgecock was underhandedly forced out by Maureen O’Conner’s people.

I had a hard time following Hedgecock's problems. Never made much sense to me. Big picture, Hedgecock was doing some stuff he shouldn't have.

From wiki:

In 1985 he was forced from office, after a second trial found him guilty of one count of conspiracy and twelve counts of perjury, related to the alleged failure to report all campaign contributions. His first trial had ended in a mistrial due to a hung jury. "Within days of the Oct. 9 guilty verdict, two of the 12 jurors in Hedgecock's case alleged in sworn statements that Burroughs [the jury bailiff] provided jurors with alcohol, told them stories, guided deliberations and pressured the jury to reach a quick verdict," and even expressed his opinion that the defendant was guilty. State prosecutors then conducted an investigation into the possibility of criminal jury tampering, but they refused to release the transcripts of their investigation interviews to the defendant's attorneys.

An appellate court in San Diego ruled in 1988, that the judge that presided over the second trial " -- who had announced from the bench that he believed Hedgecock was guilty -- was wrong to block release of" those transcripts to the defendant. Nevertheless, the defense was still denied access to those documents for two more years, until the time of the final appeal to the California Supreme Court which "...threw out the 12 perjury convictions and set aside the remaining conspiracy charge, pending a hearing on Hedgecock's claim for a new trial, which was based on allegations of jury tampering."

"The hearing for a possible third trial never took place. The defense obtained the transcripts in October, 1990. The next month, the deal was struck. Hedgecock accepted a conviction on a single felony charge in return for no jail sentence and no retrial. The deal also called for a judge to reduce the felony to a misdemeanor and dismiss the case, which is precisely what happened

I don’t know you at all. Roger Hedgecock was railroaded. I was directly related to Maureen’s husband. Roger did nothing illegal.

Would be interested if you could add anything?

I have seen enough inside politics and government to know that what we get fed by the press has nothing to do with the real story and wouldn't be suitable to spread around our vegetables. As I said before, as much as (or as little as) I followed it, the whole thing never really made much sense.
