Romney cancels Wisconsin visit due to storm
AP/Washington Examiner ^ | 10/29/12

Republican Mitt Romney has canceled his planned appearance in the Milwaukee area due to Hurricane Sandy on the east coast.

Romney had planned to campaign in West Allis on Monday night. His decision to cancel came just hours after President Barack Obama canceled a planned Tuesday campaign trip to Green Bay so he could stay in Washington to monitor the storm.

Romney spokeswoman Gail Gitcho says Romney is canceling "out of sensitivity for the millions of Americans in the path of Hurricane Sandy."

Ryan cancelled his Florida appearances too.

Romney doesn’t need to be there because Obama is pulling out.

There a time and a season under heaven.

There’s a time for politicking and a time to stand by fellow Americans.

A disaster is something that shouldn’t be mixed up with politics.

I think that Romney should still have come to the West Allis rally tonight even if Barry is pulling out of Wisconsin because the Romney campaign talked about stopping in Minnesota after appearing in Wisconsin tonight. The race is close in Minnesota (by Minnesota standards anyway) and a stop there might have been worth it.

Also, the last time a Republican suspended his campaign it didn’t work out so good. I just think these cancelled appearances are missed opportunities for Romney/Ryan. Barry is going to “play at being president” with this Sandy stuff and there is no way Romney/Ryan will enjoy the free media exposure Barry is getting from it so I think they should keep campaigning.

Mistake. Missed opportunity to pass the hat, with an offer to match dollar-for-dollar, for the victims of this storm.

McCain had a better chance of fixing the financial meltdown than Obama does of doing anything about Hurricane Sandy.

:: canceling “out of sensitivity for the millions of Americans in the path of Hurricane Sandy.” ::

That’s just OMG! WTF? stupid.

Might as well have the headline read: “Romney to Wisconsin - You Aren’t As Important to me as the Beltway Constituency.”

Fly-over America loses again!

I don’t like this strategy. Especially in important WI.

The momentum was with Romney. By following Obama, the loser, he sits idly, while Obama gets to play president - which in itself is political.

Romney could still campaign, and offer prayers and request donations before each event.

Obama is the POTUS, not Romney.

Very disappointing. Will cause him to lose momentum and give Obama a free pass while Obama can appear to be Presidential. He should be in Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin, etc raising Libya and campaigning. does he believe Obama is campaigning by this move?

One of the worst moves he could make. May cost us the election, Senate candidates also.

This absolutely sucks. Obama gets to go on TV looking presidential, saying brilliant things like “We expect many downed trees and lots of water” (REALLY? NO!) And Romney has to suspend his freakin’ campaign? BIG mistake. Just hold the rally and MENTION the people in Sandy’s path!

I would like to see Romney and Ryan on the ground in NJ and PA doing manual labor for the next week.

Remember when Ryan stopped at a St Vincent de Paul center?

Air traffic is shut down in a large part of the country. Do you realize that? Where it isn’t shut down, the flights are being cancelled, anyway because of congestion and the fact that planes are grounded elsewhere.

My husband’s flight on the west coast was cancelled and he was forced to drive to Seattle to catch his connecting flight to Texas.

It’s important that the campaign pause today and tomorrow for the hurricane.

I see this as a good move, one that people will respect. Freepers will hate him for not going to WI, but there is a bigger issue right now.

He can go back later in the week with plenty of time to build momentum there before D-Day.

Optics matter people. That’s why he is using campaign buses for the relief effort etc. right now.

There has NEVER been a disaster like this so close to an election. We have to tread carefully to avoid Obama gaining in the polls.

I don't get it but then again I have underestimated Romney throughout this entire campagne.

He seems to know what he is doing.

Perhaps it would be really bad form to be out campaigning when fellow Americans are getting hit with a nasty storm.

They only cancelled events this evening and tomorrow.

I they cancel on Wednesday, I may start to agree with you that this was a mistake.

But, this is the high part of the storm.

Obama was going to get press anyway and Romney would have gotten virtually zero coverage no matter how many stops he made today and tomorrow. Do you honestly think it would have been covered?

It’s all Sandy all the time right now.

But, at least by noon Wednesday, they should start resuming the campaign while pushing constantly for hurricane donations.
