Sandy knocked out power to at least 3.1 million people, and New York's main utility said large sections of Manhattan had been plunged into darkness by the storm. Water pressed into the island from three sides. Just before its centre reached land, the storm was stripped of hurricane status, but the distinction was purely technical, based on its shape and internal temperature. It still packed hurricane-force wind, and forecasters were careful to say it remained every bit as dangerous to the 50 million people in its path. As the storm closed in, it smacked the boarded-up big cities of the Northeast corridor — Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston — with stinging rain and gusts of more than 85 mph. It also converged with a cold-weather system that turned it into a superstorm, a monstrous hybrid consisting not only of rain and high wind but snow. Sandy made landfall at 8 p.m. near Atlantic City, which was already mostly under water and saw a piece of its world-famous Boardwalk washed away earlier in the day.

Not to sound jaded, but when blizzards and ice storms and flooding occur over flyover country, we suck it up and deal with it.
When it happens the the lib cities it becomes Frankenstorm, Storm of the Century, etc.
When we lose power life does not end. It actually goes on, richer..
You did an excellent job at something you didn’t me to do. So when was you last experience with something that knocked out the power to three million people?
Sounds bad yet there are a solid group of FReepers who will thump their chest and tell you it isn’t all that bad or outright hint you are exaggerating. Their seem to be a small but vocal contingent that I wouldn’t be surprise to hear them go up to the Lord after Armageddon and say: “Lord why all the hype in the Book of Revelations? I mean it wasn’t all that bad.”
Worse yet is all of the ‘ODS’ I’ve seen here on FR. Yes ‘Bama’ is horrible, yes he HAS GOT TO GO, but these people act like ‘Bama’ either conjurered up the storm or the whole thing is some Machiavellian plot out of a bad suspense novel. LIFE goes on, things happen. The storm doesn’t know or care that it’s election time or what ‘BAMA’ has done to this country.
I wouldn’t be surprised to hear of people who believed so much that the hurricane is just some leftist plot that they are caught unprepared for the storm and dying as a result of it crying out “It’s Obama’s fault” with their last breath!
Some seem to have reached a point where if they go to the doctor next week and he tells them that they have cancer it will be Obama’s fault! Or if they have a flat tire on the way to work next week it will be Obama’s fault! If you step on a crack and break your mother’s back it will be Obama’s fault!
To me this is the talk, methods and the mindset of the leftist. Its the same shill BS they spewed against George Bush. I thought we are better than that. I know we should be better than that. I am sure that we can be better than that.
The other thing I notice is that is the me, me, me mindset so many seem to be taking with this storm. Hell this storm will most likely KILL people and here’s people who are supposedly conservatives sounding like leftist. Everything is me me me. How is the Hurricane going to effect the election? And so on it’s sickening. So people are going to die and homes get lost and peoples lives get turned upside down and inside out, well that’s bad but how is it going to effect me? I guess it doesn’t matter what losses occur as long as it doesn’t effect the election. Seems many on FR have their priorities screwed up.
I’m in flyover country. Early reports are of at least 10 dead from Sandy. This is much bigger than a blizzard or ice storm or normal flooding.

we will see how this pans out in the end. 3.1 million people with out power is not a huge deal. Lights come back on at some point. Houses/buildings destroyed take much longer to rebuild.
With this storm you had plenty of warning to escape, prepare and stock up.
Joplin.. Not so much.

exactly. Twisters hit with little to no warning what so ever. Out east I’ve been hearing about this things coming ashore for what, a week now?
yes, it will do damage. Yes, some will sadly die. but people loosing electricity?

I was fearful of the warm air hitting the cold air and spawning tornadoes on the midwest.

I agree about Joplin.
However, this storm affects 25% of the U.S. population. In NYC alone, subways are flooded, seawater is corroding the electrical infrastructure, sewage is backed up and imagine the possible health problems. It goes on and on. Hospital generators are failing and as a result all of the patients have to be transferred elsewhere.
This is a huge deal with costs being estimated at 10 billion. Go to the hurricane thread on the breaking news sidebar. There are freepers there living through this storm.
It’s about a lot more than power and lights.
We lose about 10 folks every summer in Dallas just to excessive heat.
Poor old folks on fixed incomes try to rough it out in 108 temps.

I am going to sleep in my basement because the wind gusts are so strong and I fear another tree falling down and hitting my house. I have no power and already had two trees hit my outbuildings.
All the parkways are closed. Our first responders have been working non-stop. We are not complaining—we are tough and stubborn. But this is a tough one. Three million people have no power. All the bridges and all tunnels but one are flooded. No subways. No commuter railroad. No flights.
Prayers to my fellow New Yorkers.
